This Weekly Update by the Illinois School and Campus Safety Program links to information about upcoming National Threat Assessment Center trainings on targeted violence prevention, and promotes the upcoming Advanced Digital Threat Assessment®, Behavioral and Digital Threat Assessment™, Preventing Targeted Violence Through Leakage and Cyber Investigations, Campus Threat Assessment and Management, and Effective Communication Principles classes.

NTAC Offering Virtual Training Presentations on Targeted Violence Prevention

The U.S. Secret Service National Threat Assessment Center (NTAC) is offering 6 virtual training presentations on targeted violence prevention, with 3 sessions catered towards educators and schools safety stakeholders and 3 sessions catered towards law enforcement and community safety stakeholders. Enhancing School Safety Using Behavioral Threat Assessment is being held on May 8th, July 11th, and September 12th. Preventing Mass Attacks in Our Communities is being held on April 4th, June 5th, and August 7th.

Campus Threat Assessment and Management
April 3-4th in Rock Island

This is the last chance to register for the Campus Threat Assessment and Management class April 3-4, 2024, in Rock Island, IL. This two-day workshop featuring Gene Deisinger, Ph.D will help participants to better understand the dynamics of targeted violence and to develop and enhance strategies for early identification, assessment, and intervention with concerning situations.

Preventing Targeted Violence Through Leakage and Cyber Investigations April 8-9th in Peoria

This is the last chance to register for the Preventing Targeted Violence Through Leakage and Cyber Investigations class April 8-9, 2024, in Peoria, IL. Class objectives include:

• Why it is important NOT to disregard information given to LEO or school officials.
• What the term "Leakage" means and how we can interpret the information.
• Learn free and open source online investigative tools into social networks and App generated phone numbers.
• Learn to identify and collect cyber evidence to identify suspects.
• Learn the three-step process in investigating internet crimes.
• Learn the importance of Preservation, Exigent Circumstances, and Search Warrants.

Advanced Digital Threat Assessment®
on April 3rd via Zoom

This is the last chance to register for the Advanced Digital Threat Assessment® class on April 3rd being held via Zoom.

Building upon the Digital Threat Assessment® class by Safer Schools Together, Advanced Digital Threat Assessment® advances participants' understanding of finding and curating relevant digital information consistent with real-life digital threat assessment data gathering scenarios. Significant engagement and hands-on practice will take place as participants are assembled into investigative teams and given a true-to-life mock scenario.

Effective Communication Principles Before, During, and After Critical Incidents in Fairview Heights on April 25th

The Illinois School and Campus Safety Program is pleased to announce a session of the Effective Communication Principles Before, During, and After Critical Incidents class on April 25th in Fairview Heights, IL.

This training provides attendees comprehensive education on the subject of communications. Throughout the training, attendees will learn about the importance of building relationships with the media and the community through routine communications. The training will also provide guidance on how to prepare for a crisis communications event and what to do should that day happen. Finally, instruction will wrap up with discussion on how to effectively communicate after a critical incident.

The Illinois School and Campus Safety Program, in partnership with Safer Schools Together, is pleased to announce an upcoming session of Behavioral and Digital Threat Assessment™ on April 29th being held in Maywood, IL.

BDTA™ integrates Safer Schools Together’s Digital Threat Assessment® training and best practice from the National Threat Assessment Center’s Behavioral Threat Assessment model. BDTA™ includes a 3-step response plan developed to help S/TA teams ensure all worrisome, concerning, and threat-related behaviors are proactively responded to, reducing the potential of violence within your community. The training will examine techniques for identifying and assessing individuals who engage in behaviors consistent with a threat and provide S/TA teams with the tools to ensure a thorough data collection process. Additionally, the training will provide an overview of the assessment process, including best practices for interviewing and progress monitoring. Participants will obtain the tools vital for proactively and effectively identifying, assessing, and responding to worrisome and/or threat-related behavior through a BDTA™ management lens.

ROE 26 to Host Professional Boundaries Workshop
April 4th

Regional Offices of Education 26 & 33 will be hosting a Professional Boundaries workshop on April 4th at ROE 26 in Macomb. This workshop "explores the value of boundaries and offers guidance for developing, promoting, and supporting healthy boundaries in work roles and settings."

Training Objectives:
- Communicate to staff what constitutes healthy and unhealthy relationships and how to set boundaries with students/clients in a positive learning environment.
- Develop an understanding of how professional boundaries are the legal, ethical, and organizational frameworks that protect clients and employees from physical and emotional harm and help support a safe working environment.
- Demonstrate how good boundaries offer structure and limits while offering certain freedoms and encouragement.
- Guide educators to know that effective boundaries can help them avoid the frustrations of a more coercive, win-lose approach.
