Texas Legislation to Greatly
Increase Inventory Tax Exemption
|
Texas propane businesses may soon see relief from the burdensome Inventory Tax under a proposed bill in the Texas Legislature. HB 9, authored by Rep. Meyer, seeks to raise the exemption threshold for personal property tax (also known as the inventory tax) from $2,500 to $250,000.
Texas is one of only nine states that taxes a business’s tangible personal property, including inventory, machinery, furniture, and supplies—even if the business does not profit.
The proposed legislation is intended to reduce costs for small businesses, including propane marketers, by lowering their tax burden on inventory and other income-producing assets. If passed, the measure would go to Texas voters for final approval of the necessary constitutional amendment.
TPGA will continue to monitor the bill’s progress and provide updates.

Beneficial Ownership Information (BOI) Reporting Requirement Reinstated
|
What happened: Business organizations filed lawsuits to overturn the Corporate Transparency Act (CTA), which resulted in a pause on BOI reporting. However, on Tuesday, February 18, 2025, a federal court reinstated the reporting requirements.
What it means: Most corporations, LLCs, and similar entities formed or registered to do business in the U.S. must file their Beneficial Ownership Information (BOI) with the U.S. Treasury Department’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) by March 21, 2025.
Advocacy groups continue the fight to overturn BOI reporting requirements in federal court and repeal it in Congress.
