INTERFAITH VIGIL FOR PASSOVER & EASTER HOLY WEEK

Religious Easter & Passover protest at ICE:

Confronting Corporations Profiting from Detention and War

On the heels of this weekend’s No Kings Day, which also called for No ICE and No War, religious leaders and followers will gather at the SF ICE headquarters to ritually denounce the corporate profiteers of war and immigrant detention.

Religious leaders will be naming and confronting top Fortune 100 companies, many prominent in the Bay Area, who are directly engaged with the ICE raids and detention, surveillance, transportation, and military operations such as:

  • AI Surveillance from companies like Amazon, Google and Palantir, which sell data infrastructures, facial recognition, and predictive targeting tools to military, ICE, and border enforcement
  • Oil corporations like Chevron, fund and benefit from military protection of extraction zones globally, including regions with heightened conflicts. War protects their profits, and their profits fund more war, a never ending cycle of direct harm.
  • Transport & Logistics focused companies like FedEx, G4S, and Enterprise which transport bomb parts, immigrants in detention and allow their cars to be part of ICE operations.
  • Private Immigration Prison Companies which operate in California, specifically Geo Group and Corecivic, which are rife with abuse and profit per body—- the more people they detain and incarcerate, the more revenue they earn.

The prayer will include personal testimonies of families impacted by the bombings, destruction, and immigration detention. Faith leaders will perform powerful rituals with art, singing and participation. Faith leaders are calling for people to not remain silence on these matters and for the faithful and wider community to engage in non-violent non-cooperation such as boycotts, embargoes and divestments as concrete actions.

Quotes:

“Across our faiths, we share a common teaching: Do not kill and take the life of another. Cherish peace. Care for the vulnerable. Do not financially profit from suffering. These companies are not innocent bystanders but the very architects of this system: they build surveillance tools that track us, detention centers that cage our neighbors and loved ones, supply chains that arm and transport machinery of war and deportation. We cannot remain silent.”

- Rev. Deborah Lee, Interfaith Movement for Human Integrity

“We are heartbroken and outraged at the daily bombing and disappearances. As Christians during this holy week, we remember that Jesus confronted the agents of exploitation and flipped the tables of those profiting off suffering of the poor. Today, we will flip the tables on those profiting off of war and the abductions of the neighbors. We will turn the tables on corporate profiteering and reset the table of welcome and beloved community,”

  - Rev. Joanna Shenk, First Mennonite Church, San Francisco

“Passover is the season of liberation, and until all of us are free, none of us are free. We are drawing on the liberatory traditions of Passover's Biur Hametz — the ritual burning and clearing away of what must not be carried forward —rejecting the agents of oppression and war.”

    - Rabbi Lynn Gottlieb, Shomeret Shalom

“All children - are our children. Every human life is sacred. We reject the normalization of war, state violence, surveillance, deportation, and detention — in our neighborhoods, at our borders, and across the world. We will not be silent about the corporations profiting from war and violence. Community, accountability, and moral courage are more powerful than fear.”

- Gala King, Co-Director Interfaith Movement for Human Integrity

GLOBAL CRISIS -

WHAT CAN WE DO?

  • International and domestic law is ignored and attacked.

This half-day conference will survey the crisis we are facing economically, politically, and militarily. Experts will discuss current national and international geopolitical issues. We will share ideas for what we can do to resist and stop the descent toward international disaster.

Guest speakers include:

  • JACK RASMUS, Author and Economics Professor - St. Mary's College
  • GERRY CONDON, former National President of Veterans for Peace

VOTE NO ON VOTER RESTRICTIONS!

Sign the petition: BLOCK the SAVE America Act

The U.S. House passed the SAVE America Act, an extreme “show your papers” voter suppression bill fueled by far-right propaganda and anti-immigrant conspiracy theories.1

Trump is trying to force through national voter ID at the polls. He’s demanding proof of citizenship to register to vote. The SAVE America Act will stop millions from casting ballots in the midterms.2 Our Senators must oppose Trump’s attempt to shred our constitutional right to vote.

Sign the petition: Block the SAVE America Act

Under Trump’s restrictive bill, people can’t register to vote or update their registrations without a passport or original birth certificate — documents that 21 million people don’t have ready access to. Tens of millions of women who’ve changed their last names after marriage and may not have a passport or birth certificate with their current last name would face additional burdens. And every single voter would need to show a government-issued photo ID with an up-to-date address and current name before casting a ballot.3

The SAVE America Act is yet another Trump attempt to interfere in our free and fair elections. There is no mass “noncitizen” voting that justifies any of this. The 2020 election was not stolen. But Trump, Stephen Miller, and Pam Bondi are counting on enough Republicans and MAGA loyalists to get behind these myths so they can rig the midterms. Steve Bannon even wants to send ICE to “surround the polls” come November.4

The Senate must reject the worst voter suppression bill in modern history.

Reject the SAVE America Act now!

VOTE FOR ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION

FROM PEACE CENTER MEMBER MARTI ROACH of 350 Contra Costa.

This is an important and easy action to support environmental protections, including in Contra Costa County.

BACKGROUND

The Trump administration released plans to open more than 1 million acres of public lands and mineral rights to oil and gas drilling and fracking in Southern California and the Central Valley, Central Coast and Bay Area.

The areas slated by Trump for drilling and fracking are near spectacular public lands, including state parks, national parks, forests, wildlife refuges, and the Carrizo Plain National Monument. Oil companies could target land around popular sites like Pinnacles National Park, Mount Diablo State Park, Henry W. Coe State Park and Black Diamond Mines Regional Preserve.

Draft environmental impact statements and resource management plans from the Bureau of Land Management would allow new fossil fuel extraction across eight counties under the Bakersfield Field Office: Fresno, Kern, Kings, Madera, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Tulare and Ventura. The Central Coast plan would allow drilling across another 10 counties: Alameda, Contra Costa, Fresno, Merced, Monterey, San Benito, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz and San Joaquin.

NEW THIS WEEK:

ALISTAIR CROOKE: Is Trump Negotiating with Iran?

Interviewed by Judge Napolitano

JOHN MEARSHEIMER: "Iran Holds All the Cards" - The Strategic Defeat of the U.S.

Interviewed by Prof. Glenn Diesen

Prof. John Mearsheimer explains why Iran holds all the cards and could devastate the US and the global economy by going up the escalation ladder. A U.S. defeat in Iran, which appears inevitably, will also result in a much wider strategic defeat of the US position in the international system.

BILL McKIBBEN: Night Into Day, The thing changing the world this year is...batteries.

"I am beyond heartsick at the war and America’s role in it—there was a remarkable piece of reporting in the Times this morning showing the technology we’ve been spending our money and talent on. Apparently there’s a brand new missile, from Lockheed, called PrSM, pronounced prism and short for Precision Strike Missile. It’s a short-range ballistic missile, designed to “detonate just above its target and blast small tungsten pellets outward.” And on the first day of the war, when we were blowing up that girls school in Minab, we apparently detonated one of these things just above a sports hall where there was a girls volleyball tournament underway, and 21 people died."

FROM LAST WEEK:

PROF. SEYED M. MARANDI interviewed by Prof. Glenn Diesen: Total War - Attacking Nuclear Plants, Desalination & Infrastructure

Seyed Mohammad Marandi discusses the targeting of nuclear plants, desalination plants, critical infrastructure, and the civilian population. Trump has given Iran 48 hours to open the Strait of Hormuz (capitulation), otherwise the US will destroy Iran's energy facilities. Then there will be no limits on Iran's response, and the consequences will be global. The future of global stability will be decided over the next few days. Marandi is a professor at Tehran University and a former advisor to Iran's Nuclear Negotiation Team.

NIMA R. ALKHORSHID: JUST IN: Israeli F-16 Downed by Iran, The Middle East Will Never Be the Same

CRAIG MURRAY: Seeing Trump Clearly

"It’s comforting to see Donald Trump as a buffoon, to accept the facade he presents of a blustering and ill-educated ignoramus who does not understand the world of geopolitics. But that is nonsense."

World BEYOND War has

a DIVESTMENT campaign!

About the Campaign

Grassroots-led war divestment campaigns are springing up all over the world, from students organizing to divest university endowments, to municipalities and states coming together to divest public pension funds. Divestment means organizing to remove public and private assets from weapons manufacturers, military contractors, and war profiteers.

Public pension and retirement funds especially are often invested, directly and indirectly, in weapons companies. Teachers and other public servants whose interests lie with promoting human needs have their retirement security tied up with maintaining or enlarging the war industry. Every dollar currently invested in weapons and war is a dollar that could be better spent on job creation, education, housing, healthcare, food security, and so much more.

War profiteering is largely normalized today. We’re working to stigmatize the war machine. World BEYOND War assists divestment campaigns led by our chapters, affiliates, other coalitions, and individuals around the world.
