Mandela students visit sister school in Oaxaca
|
Mandela International Magnet School students visited Liceo Federico Froebel, its International Baccalaureate (IB) sister school, in Oaxaca, Mexico from March 18th to 28th. "It was fascinating to hear students from both schools and in two languages speaking of the same IB requirements," said Randy Grillo, Mandela's head learner, who accompanied the students on the visit.
"There is much in Oaxacan culture of community building that relates to Mandela International Magnet School’s culture of Ubuntu, I am because we are," he said.
"I was touched by the concert that the music teacher put on for the high school. Utilizing his music students and singers as well as our drummer, cellist, violinist, guitarist and singer, we witnessed the first ever bilateral concert in the history of Mandela International Magnet School. It brought tears to my eyes to remember a sign I saw long ago on the Mexican border -- Entre amigos no hay fronteras. By the end of the assembly, the entire high school -- Oaxacans and Santa Feans -- were line dancing together!" he said.

Capital students exhibit art on Canyon Road
|
Capital High School students exhibited their art at Canyon Road Contemporary Art Gallery on Friday, March 17th at the Capital High School Exhibition Fundraiser. Lots of sales were made or items donated. Said teacher Bill Johnson, "Eleven students and families came and they got to experience one of the top galleries on Canyon Road." Some of the students who exhibited their art are pictured below.
Student Corbin Romero said of his artwork, "“My artwork is somewhat simple when it comes to the background. But it is mostly simple with little detail, like the lines in the sky or the strokes on the moon. Van Gogh and how he styled some of his paintings inspired me to make the painting with little strokes and simplicity. As I am a simple person, I try to express that in my art.”
