The Meher Schools Celebrates 50 Years in Lafayette

On Sunday, February 23, more than 1,000 people gathered to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the founding of the White Pony Preschool and Meher Elementary School. This included hundreds of graduates as well as former teachers of the school, some traveling from across the country. Located in Lafayette, the school, whose name means compassion, has nurtured generations of students since its founding in 1975.

The celebration offered video montages of school plays, photos from the past 50 years, a chance to meet the teachers, and a storytelling session that allowed alumni, teachers, and parents to share their memories and experiences of the school throughout the years.

The White Pony/Meher School began in 1975 as a one-room preschool and daycare center with nine students that evolved into a combined elementary and preschool. It is the fulfillment of Murshida Ivy Duce’s dream for a school for children based on Meher Baba's principles of love, harmony, beauty, and selfless service to life.

The preschool is called the White Pony, and the grade school is the Meher School. Together they are known as The Meher Schools.

Each year, the school has a "Founders Day," celebrating the birthdays of the school and its founders, Murshida Ivy Duce and Meher Baba.

Psychiatric Advance Directives (PADs)

Contra Costa Behavioral Health Services (CCBHS), in partnership with consumers, families and community-based agencies, provides welcoming mental health and substance use services that promote wellness, recovery and resiliency while respecting the complexity and diversity of the people served.

In recent years, CCBHS has expanded its mobile crisis response efforts, with countywide teams serving both youth and adults. Through a lengthy 2021 community planning process, a comprehensive crisis resource center, known as the Miles Hall Community Crisis Hub, is currently underway. This effort is based on the philosophy that appropriate crisis care should be available to Anyone – Anyplace – Anytime (A3).

A coordinated Psychiatric Advanced Directive process will complement this effort and assist law enforcement and mobile crisis teams in responding to community members experiencing a mental health crisis. Having an accessible PAD in place can minimize the harm and trauma often associated with involuntary detainment during a psychiatric crisis. We believe this will empower individuals living with mental illness by promoting self determination, as well as provide valuable information to providers and first responders.

The draft Psychiatric Advance Directives (PADs) Multi-County Collaborative, Mental Health Services Act Innovation Project, Fiscal Year 2024-2029 documents are posted for review and 30-day public comment for the implementation of PADs, Phase 2.

The document is located at the following site under Public Notices at:
