This Weekly Update by the Illinois School and Campus Safety Program links to a new School Threat Assessment Toolkit from the National Center for School Safety, provides a final chance to register for the Effective Communication Principles and Digital Threat Assessment classes, and promotes the upcoming Site Safety Security Assessment, Advanced Digital Threat Assessment®, Behavioral and Digital Threat Assessment™, Preventing Targeted Violence Through Leakage and Cyber Investigations, and Campus Threat Assessment and Management classes.

National Center for School Safety Releases School Threat Assessment Toolkit

The National Center for School Safety just released a new School Threat Assessment Toolkit. The toolkit "offers guidance on training, implementation, and assessment of school TA teams," and "It aims to ensure fidelity to student rights while providing practical tools like documents, forms, videos, and additional resources to support schools’ efforts." The toolkit discusses what threat assessment is, its origins, and the current need for it, as well as including sections on selecting and training school threat assessment teams, implementing threat assessment, and evaluating your threat assessment program's effectiveness.

Effective Communication Principles Before, During, and After Critical Incidents in Pekin on March 14th

This is the last chance to register for the Effective Communication Principles Before, During, and After Critical Incidents class on March 14th in Pekin, IL.

This training provides attendees comprehensive education on the subject of communications. Throughout the training, attendees will learn about the importance of building relationships with the media and the community through routine communications. The training will also provide guidance on how to prepare for a crisis communications event and what to do should that day happen. Finally, instruction will wrap up with discussion on how to effectively communicate after a critical incident.

Digital Threat Assessment® on March 15th via Zoom

This is the last chance to register for the Digital Threat Assessment® class on March 15th being held via Zoom.

The Digital Threat Assessment® training will enable participants to establish a framework to better assess all threats by constructing and considering the digital baseline of a threat maker by locating, documenting, and evaluating social media data through a threat assessment lens. A significant portion of the day will be spent engaging in hands-on exercises on the most prevalent social media platforms and associated search applications.

Site Safety Security Assessment Training March 22nd in Gurnee

There's still time to register for the Site Safety Security Assessment class on March 22, 2024, in Gurnee, IL. The training provides awareness resources and preparedness training to enhance organizational capacity to conduct multidisciplinary site assessments. The process of conducting a school site safety security assessment creates opportunities to reduce or eliminate potential hazards and develop recommendations for improvement.

Upcoming Session of Advanced Digital Threat Assessment® on April 3rd via Zoom

The Illinois School and Campus Safety Program, in partnership with Safer Schools Together, is pleased to announce an upcoming session of Advanced Digital Threat Assessment® on April 3rd being held via Zoom.

Building upon the Digital Threat Assessment® class by Safer Schools Together, Advanced Digital Threat Assessment® advances participants' understanding of finding and curating relevant digital information consistent with real-life digital threat assessment data gathering scenarios. Significant engagement and hands-on practice will take place as participants are assembled into investigative teams and given a true-to-life mock scenario.

Upcoming Session of Campus Threat Assessment and Management April 3-4th in Rock Island

The Illinois School and Campus Safety Program is pleased to announce the class Campus Threat Assessment and Management will be held April 3-4, 2024, in Rock Island, IL. This two-day workshop for institutions of higher education featuring Gene Deisinger, Ph.D will help participants to better understand the dynamics of targeted violence and to develop and enhance strategies for early identification, assessment, and intervention with concerning situations.

Upcoming Session of Preventing Targeted Violence Through Leakage and Cyber Investigations April 8-9th in Peoria

The Illinois School and Campus Safety Program is pleased to announce a session of the Preventing Targeted Violence Through Leakage and Cyber Investigations class will be held April 8-9, 2024, in Peoria, IL. Class objectives include:

• Why it is important NOT to disregard information given to LEO or school officials.
• What the term "Leakage" means and how we can interpret the information.
• Learn free and open source online investigative tools into social networks and App generated phone numbers.
• Learn to identify and collect cyber evidence to identify suspects.
• Learn the three-step process in investigating internet crimes.
• Learn the importance of Preservation, Exigent Circumstances, and Search Warrants.
• Learn how to obtain IP's, screen names, screen captures, and email headers.
• State laws: Terrorist Threat, Falsely Making a Terrorist Threat, Swatting, and Causing a Catastrophe.
• Suspect search warrant, arrest, interrogation, and mental health evaluation.
• Examine a successful cyber-crime case study investigation from start to finish.

Upcoming Session of Behavioral and Digital Threat Assessment™ May 8th in Springfield

The Illinois School and Campus Safety Program, in partnership with Safer Schools Together, is pleased to announce an upcoming session of Behavioral and Digital Threat Assessment™ on May 8th being held in Springfield, IL.

BDTA™ integrates Safer Schools Together’s Digital Threat Assessment® training and best practice from the National Threat Assessment Center’s Behavioral Threat Assessment model. BDTA™ includes a 3-step response plan developed to help S/TA teams ensure all worrisome, concerning, and threat-related behaviors are proactively responded to, reducing the potential of violence within your community. The training will examine techniques for identifying and assessing individuals who engage in behaviors consistent with a threat and provide S/TA teams with the tools to ensure a thorough data collection process. Additionally, the training will provide an overview of the assessment process, including best practices for interviewing and progress monitoring. Participants will obtain the tools vital for proactively and effectively identifying, assessing, and responding to worrisome and/or threat-related behavior through a BDTA™ management lens.
