“Dear People of God: The first Christians observed with great devotion the days of our Lord's passion and resurrection, and it became the custom of the Church to prepare for them by a season of penitence and fasting. This season of Lent provided a time in which converts to the faith were prepared for Holy Baptism. It was also a time when those who, because of notorious sins, had been separated from the body of the faithful were reconciled by penitence and forgiveness, and restored to the fellowship of the Church. Thereby, the whole congregation was put in mind of the message of pardon and absolution set forth in the Gospel of our Savior, and of the need which all Christians continually have to renew their repentance and faith.
I invite you, therefore, in the name of the Church, to the
observance of a holy Lent, by self-examination and repentance;
by prayer, fasting, and self-denial; and by reading and
meditating on God's holy Word…” (Book of Common Prayer p. 264-265)
These are the first words heard in the Ash Wednesday service that prepare us for the upcoming season of Lent. It’s the one time of year we intentionally focus on our relationship with God through self-denial and fasting. When we deny ourselves sacrificially, we open up a place for God to enter in. Making space for God in your mind and heart clears the way for God to speak (while you pray) and for you to hear (while you listen). Giving up something we value and hold dear is a sacrifice of pleasure or satisfaction.
Another way to approach a Lenten discipline is to take on something new that will expand your understanding of the Divine or give you pause when looking at how your prioritize your life and time. This can be attending a bible study, expanding your prayer time, or perhaps being of service to one who needs time and attention. There are a number of things one can take on that ask you to realign how you spend your time and for what purpose.Whatever you choose to do, give up something or take something on, I pray you will do it with intention and love for the Lord your God, being ever mindful of the sacrifices he made for us.
Please join me during these next 40 days as I wander the wilderness of my mind and heart, praying for a closer relationship with God. During this journey, “May Almighty God be with you, may Jesus Christ show you the way and the Holy Spirit awaken the wildness of your soul.” Amen

We Have Deep Episcopal Roots
Results of our Parish Survey, conducted last summer, reveal that nearly a quarter of us are cradle Episcopalians, with another 40% being Episcopalian for 20 or more years. Also, two-thirds of us are members of Trinity, while others are members of another Episcopal Church, or another denomination.
