Message from President Sara Beacham

Greetings!
Every week I check in with my coach. She wants to know several things about how my week went, including diversions from the plan and my mental state. I bet you’re wondering if I have lost my mind talking about my check-ins with my coach when I should be talking about Soroptimist. Well, I may have only lost my mind a little bit, and I do have a point.
One of the important takeaways I have learned about checking in every week for the past year on things like Diversions and Mental State is flexibility. Flexibility is good for the body but also for the mental state, especially when things go sideways, as in we have no microphone for the club’s business meeting. For those of you who were with us at last week’s business meeting, you understand what I’m talking about. I want to take a moment this week to send my appreciation to the entire club for its flexibility. Sometimes, things don’t work as they’re supposed to. Other times, microphones are just plain missing or don’t work. The gentlemen working the Elks that day apologized for the mishap and stated they’re all volunteers. I thanked him and told him we are too.
This week we had originally planned to have an awards luncheon. Due to unforeseen circumstances, we have combined this week’s originally planned awards luncheon with the awards luncheon on April 13. Our programs coordinator Roseann Bradley jumped into action, and our very own Carla Bee has stepped up to deliver an exciting program. This is another way our club has displayed flexibility. Thank you!
Other upcoming information you have been waiting for on the President’s Project had been delayed, too, but it’s here now. We have the registration link and flyer ready for distribution. We have limited seating and will be providing dinner and dessert along with a dynamic keynote speaker and mentor panel. This event is designed to connect our 20-something women in the community with female business and community leaders. I want our club to extend our philanthropy to a demographic that tends to fall between the cracks – 20-something women just out of high school or in college or just not sure what they want to do with their lives. Here is the registration link for the live event to be held Friday, April 8, 2022 at 5:30 pm at the Chico Women’s Club: http://tinyurl.com/advocate4great.
Thank you for helping me promote the project. I am still in need of a couple of mentor panelists and a caterer. Can you help?
See you Wednesday!
President Sara

Carla Bee's BIO: I grew up in Hayward CA, with four siblings, 3 sisters and 1 brother. Growing up in Bay Area during the 60-70’s was both an exciting and challenging times. As a child I was able to travel a lot and meet lots of interesting people.
At a very young age I was taught, ‘that all lives matter’ and treat everyone with dignity and respect.
I attended Chico State from 1972-78. During that time, I received two Bachelor of Arts degrees, in Early Childhood Education and Social Welfare/Corrections. This is where I found my passion, teaching and working with at-risk children; particularly those with emotional and cognitive disabilities. So throughout Northern California and Oregon my journey began, working in preschools, group homes, detention facilities, licensing foster homes, and counseling teen mothers on public assistance.
Then for the next 30 years, while living in Oregon, I had three gorgeous children, completed my Masters degree in Adult Education and worked at two separate community colleges. As Director, of the Job Opportunity Basic Skills/JOBS Program, I administered comprehensive programs that provided education, vocational training and counseling to recipients on public assistance. Most REWARDING job for me, EVER!
Retired at 58 years old, sold off most of my belongings and moved to the Dominican Republic for a year. Biggest stress living there was, “shall I lay in a hammock or lay on the beach”? When I got too much sun and sand, I did volunteer some, at a local orphanage, taught English and/or worked with victims of domestic violence.
Seems to be a common thread throughout my life, no wonder Soroptimist International is such a good match for me!
I volunteer as a Reading Pal with Parkview Elementary School, Chico Food Pantry, the Discovery Shop and am a Foundation Board Member with Inspire School.
In my free time, I enjoy traveling, camping, biking, and kayaking. Living the Good Life!

Governor Sarah's Message
Hello,
We are going to celebrate being together like never before. Everything I want to say, is in the Call to Conference, no need to repeat myself. The links to the Agenda and the Call to the 6th Board Meeting of the Biennium as well as to register for conference, are below.
Call to Conference, April 1 – 3, 2022, IN PERSON at the Atlantis Casino Resort Spa in Reno, Nevada, click here. Registration is open, click here. Click here to make your room reservation.
Call to the 6th Board Meeting of the 2020-2022 Biennium, click here. Tentative Agenda for the 6th Board Meeting of the 2020-2022 Biennium, click here.
I have to say it has been very trying for me, I had mapped out a virtual conference because our state reverted back to wearing mask, then I was going back and forth, but now I am happy that I decided to go with an in-person event, especially since both the State of Nevada and the State of California have released the indoor mask wearing mandate. I want everyone to be comfortable, so do what is best for you. I look forward to mingling in person with all of you.
Best,
Governor Sarah

March Fur Baby and Member of the Month - Riley & Amy Griffin
Meet Riley, an 8-month-old pup that belongs to new member Amy Griffin and her husband Michael. Amy didn’t want a dog but finally said yes to this adorable labradoodle after much convincing from her family. She has since fallen in love.
Amy teaches at Chico State and loves skiing, mountain biking and scuba diving. Her and her husband recently became empty nesters. They have two wonderful daughters Kallie and Aisling in their 20s that live in Reno.

Dress a Girl .....…. We plan to get together at Cathy’s Sew&Vac as soon as it’s safe (those nights are so fun & productive!), but with the recent wave of Covid in Butte County, we feel it would be safer to start by individually making some dresses at home.
Let’s get started!
Please let us know how many dress kits you’d like (or if you have supplies to make them on your own, we can send you the instructions).
If you have extra fabric to donate to this worthwhile project (or if you know any seamstresses/quilters), they are always welcomed!
