The Atwater Village Voice
Join us Thursday March 12th for the AVNC Meeting!

As many of you have heard, our March Governing Board meeting is being held at Atwater Avenue Elementary School! So pack your book bags and come on down! The meeting starts at 7, but please come early to enjoy art work that is on display from our local students and check out the campus with the Friends of Atwater Elementary!

We also just wanted to say thank you to all who came out for our February meeting! It was a packed house, and we really appreciate all the feedback we got! But this meeting won't disappoint either! We have another action packed agenda, and we hope you bring your neighbors and family to come tell us what you think! Here are some of the items we hope you'll come weight in on:

Possible approval of Neighborhood Purpose Grants for  Independent Shakespeare Company ($2500), Atwater Art Walk ($500) and Friends of Atwater Elementary ($1000).

Also, a letter of concern regarding the proposed small lot subdivision on Glenhurst Ave. will be discussed.

Funding Requests from the AVNC Outreach Committee and Survey Committee.

And two community impact statements AGAINST the promotion/use of artificial turf in parkways and private property will also be discussed!

Come tell us what you think!

See you there!

So I'm a Stakeholder...What Does It Mean?

In our January Newsletter, we summarized how you figure out if you are an Atwater Village Stakeholder. That's great and all, but why should you care?

The AVNC is here for stakeholders. It's not that we don't care what people who don't have a stake in our community think... but first and foremost, we're here to represent you, our stakeholder, no matter how you got that status.

In addition...

  • Stakeholders (age 16 and up) get to vote in Atwater Village Neighborhood Council elections. Our last election in April 2014 brought in 270 voters... a big improvement, but with more than 10,000 stakeholders in the community, we can do better! When stakeholders turn out to vote, you get an AVNC that is more representative of the community.

  • Stakeholders can run in the AVNC election. The next one will be in Spring 2016... we will start candidate outreach around December or January. Let us know if you're interested in running for one of our seats.

But elections are a long way off... surely there's something else? Something that a stakeholder can do now?

1.) Stakeholders can join (and be voting members of) AVNC committees. And we need you! This is a lot of work, and none of us get paid for it. Come volunteer to join a committee! Here's how:

2.) Choose a committee. Some are ad-hoc, meaning they're established for a specific short-term purpose, like to throw an event or accomplish a project. Others are standing committees, which operate year-round to manage certain interest areas.

3.) Come to a committee meeting. You can contact the committee chair to ensure you get notified of the next meeting. Most are also posted on Nextdoor (Note: AVNC does not run the Nextdoor page) and they are always posted on our website.

4.) When the committee chair asks if anyone is interested in joining, say YES! This will be near the end of the meeting.

5.) At the next General Board Meeting, your nomination is confirmed by the full Board.

6.) Show up to the very next committee meeting and you'll be officially in! Now you can vote on most committee decisions... which is where a lot of the work happens.
