Happy spring!
It's so lovely to be getting to the time of year when fingers don't freeze in gloves after more than an hour outside! I hope you are getting the most out of these lovely early spring days before the rain comes in later in the week.
Here at CCE we are very happy to announce two new hires - you can read more about our Farmland Protection and Ag Marketing Educator and our new Horticulture Team Leader below!
And we're continuing to work on having more in-person programming, including this week's Ag Summit, focused this year on municipal officials but with a great agenda that will interest many farmers as well! (You can register here.)
We're also continuing our six-part series on 'Farming in a Changing World', offered in collaboration with CCE Tioga, CCE Schuyler, CCE Cortland and the Harvest NY team. Register for the next event (today at noon!) here.
You can find details about all of these programs and more below. I hope you get to take advantage of some of them, and hope they give us a chance to meet and discuss how things are going on your operation and how CCE might be of assistance.
As always, if you have items of interest to the Tompkins farming community, please send them along and we'll include them in the next edition. And please reach out and let us know what you'd like to see from the Ag Team here at CCETC!

Used solar panels available
|
|
A group of students from Cornell University is working to distribute used solar panels to community members who might find second-life uses for the panels and remove them from the landfill. These solar panels are free but require some refurbishment. After refurbishment, each panel can produce about 165 watts of energy. If you would like to use these panels for any reason, please contact Anant Gupta here. More information about the panels is available in this graphic.

State and National Farm News
|
|
Developing new uses and markets for manure may result in both economic and environmental benefits. Livestock production tends to be geographically concentrated in the United States, and in certain regions, animals generate more manure-supplied nutrients than are needed by nearby cropland. Manure has a low and variable nutrient density, making it costly to transport and apply to fields that are located far from animal production facilities. In addition, nitrogen and phosphorus levels in manures may not match the nutrient needs of crops. Inappropriately managing manure can impair air and water quality.

In an innovative project funded by the New York Farm Viability Institute, field robots equipped with RGB (Red-Green-Blue) imaging will sense for color changes on lower-level leaves of corn crops. Sensing for color changes can assess nitrogen deficiencies or excesses in corn plants and help in determining optimum nitrogen levels. The project will collect data from different fields, different growing seasons, and different times of day (daytime and nighttime) to test the robotic platform and create a robust data set.
