Dear ,

Welllllll . . . . I am not sure whether I should be laughing or crying, but this March has (so far) been one for the record books. After a great early start to the winter, the weather turned fickle and we could actually see bare ground in our back yard at the end of February. I even started to think about gardening. Silly me!

I am not exaggerating when I tell you that we have received about 50-60 inches of snow in the past few weeks and there is even more expected next week. If you are a skier or rider and have some free time - GET HERE AND ENJOY THE SNOW. That's an order.

This month's newsletter starts our new publication schedule with a bi-monthly format. I started the newsletter in January of 2013 and the past five years have flown by. You have all been incredibly supportive and I love hearing how much you like the newsletter and appreciate the news, updates and calendar. We'll have to see how this goes and, who knows, I may transition back to a monthly format sometime in the future. Until then, enjoy the March issue.

Be well and stay in touch.

Getting Ready for Spring - Gardening Tips

Spring Garden Readiness. Really.

Given the brutal winter many of us have experienced-bitter cold, snow, and more bitter cold-it's hard to believe that the start of the spring gardening season really is just weeks away.
The Chicago Botanic Garden offers some ways for those in cold climates to get the garden ready for spring.
1. As the days warm up, gradually pull back mulch from around perennial crowns. Remove dead leaves from perennial clumps and be careful not to injure emerging new leaves.
2. Cut back to the ground all perennials and ornamental grasses that were left standing for winter interest.
3. Start seeds for annuals and vegetables in a moist, soilless seed mix. They can be started six to eight weeks before May 15, the last spring frost date.

Vermont's Maple Open House Weekend is March 24-25
The weekend of March 24-25 is Vermont's Maple Open House Weekend, a statewide event celebrating sugaring season.

Sugar makers throughout Vermont will open the doors of their sugarhouses, inviting visitors in to experience and enjoy this remarkable time of year when pure Vermont maple syrup is made.

Whether it's the sight of steam rising from the sugarhouse, the inviting aroma of boiling sap, or the sweetly divine flavor of syrup as enjoyed in traditional sugar-on-snow, visitors are treated to an experience for the senses!
For more information, see Vermont Maple's website or call Mary Mitchell Miller Real Estate at (802)824-3176 for information on participating sugarhouses in our local area.
FREE Ice Cream - Seriously!
Who doesn't love ice cream? Better yet, who doesn't love FREE ice cream! Ben & Jerry's will be offering its annual Free Cone Day on April 10th this year.

Green Mountain Gourmet
The Colonial House Inn & Motel's
Vermont Maple Mousse
It's March and you know what that means . . . another recipe featuring fresh Vermont maple syrup. This month we are proud to partner with Kim and Jeff Seymour of Weston's Colonial House Inn & Motel for a quick, easy and delicious dessert.

The Art (and Chemistry) of Making Maple Syrup
   3 egg yolks
   2 cups heavy cream
   ¾ cup Vermont maple syrup

1. Beat egg yolks in the top of a double boiler (off heat) until lemon yellow colored.
2. Heat maple syrup to boiling point and pour very slowly into egg yolks while whisking continuously.
3. Continue to cook egg and maple syrup mixture over boiling water until the eggs coat a spoon (170 degrees). Be careful not to heat the mixture too fast!
4. Cool mixture over ice while stirring constantly, bring to room temperature.
5. In a separate bowl, beat heavy cream until stiff and doubled in volume.
6. Fold the maple-egg mixture into the whipped cream until well blended.
7. Using a large pastry bag without the nozzle, fill parfait or old fashioned glasses.
8. Refrigerate until ready to use or freeze it for several days
9. Serves 4-6 depending on serving size.

The Colonial House Inn & Motel is located about one mile south of Weston village at 287 Route 100 in Weston and additional information can be found on their website here .
