March 17, 2025

Dear Claudia:

It's fitting that the newsletter is coming to you on the Greenest Day of the Year (Happy St. Patrick's Day, y'all!), because this edition is clearly dedicated to and celebrating all things green . . . with a little gold thrown in for good measure.

* Vermont is the Green Mountain State - no ifs, ands or buts about it!

* Mary Mitchell Miller Real Estate's logo, officially established in 1972 and refined a few times since, has always been a deep, vibrant green.

* Vermont's annual Green Up Day will be May 3.

* Home buyer and home seller trends are a direct connection to what is typically your largest financial investment, so pay attention to market trends.

The end of March means the end of our winter and ski seasons and the onset of what non-locals fondly call spring and we locals call mud season. Let's hope it's minimally-awful and April's showers bring May's flowers sooner rather than later.

Be well and stay in touch, and we'll see you again in May!

Green Up Day is May 3

Contrary to what you may think, Green Up Day is no longer organized by a state agency. Instead, Green Up Vermont is a non-profit organization responsible for carrying on this great annual tradition.

Every community in Vermont has a Green Up Day, focusing on roadsides, natural and public spaces, and waterways throughout the entire state. People of all ages and all walks of life gather to keep Vermont green and beautiful. Make a family event and help the next generation of citizens appreciate what makes Vermont special and how they can help combat the negative effects of littering.

Visit the How to Participate page to find your town's Green Up Day coordinator, where to get Green Up bags, and what to do with them afterwards.

Celebrate All Things Maple

March 22-23

Not to be outdone by this month's focus on all things green, it's also time to celebrate what is often called Vermont's "Liquid Gold" and highlight our favorite Vermont crop - maple syrup!

Vermont’s annual Spring Maple Open House returns on March 22 & 23, when Vermont’s sugar makers celebrate their crop and all things maple by opening the doors of their sugarhouses and invite visitors in to experience the joys and traditions of pure maple syrup. Whether it’s the sight of steam rising from the sugarhouse, the inviting aroma of boiling sap, or the sweetly divine flavor of syrup as enjoyed in traditional sugar-on-snow, visitors are treated to an experience for the senses!

Upcoming Local Events

Wednesday, March 26

Just Getting By – Just Getting By, a new documentary film by Bess O’Brien focused on Vermonters struggling with food and housing insecurity is a free event with support from Vermont Humanities. Director Bess O’Brien will be part of a special Q and A after the film. Just Getting By is a sweeping, and yet intimate look at the lives of Vermonters who are struggling with food and housing insecurity. The film has been touring the state and is raising consciousness about the pressing issues that working and low income people are dealing with every day in their lives. One third of Vermonters struggle to put food on the table. These are big issues for a small state. Just Getting By focuses on these issues in the lives of everyday people. 630 PM at the Heald Auditorium at Ludlow Town Hall, 37 South Depot Street in Ludlow, VT.

Saturday, March 29

The Many Meanings of Maple – Presented by Vermont Humanities and the Black River Academy Museum, this presentation examines the many meanings of maple sugaring. Maple is enormously important to Vermont’s economy, ecology, and heritage. Champlain College professor Michael Lange will discuss sugaring ethnographically, based on over five years of research among sugarmakers all over the state, to learn from them what sugaring really means to Vermont. Rather than discussing the practical aspects of sugaring, such as how to tap a tree or how an evaporator works, his talk focuses on how and why maple has become so important to Vermont’s identity, and how and why it helps us shape who we are as Vermonters. Free, 530 PM at the Black River Academy Museum, 14 High Street in Ludlow. More information Here
