On the Actual St. Patrick's Day, Thursday
March 17
The New Irish Wake will take place at 2 venues this year.
First, Part 1:
Irish Session
3-6pm
The Calathumpians and Friends will be playing an Irish Session. Sing along with some of the traditional Irish Wake songs (songbooks will be available) and plan to have an early dinner: Gretchen will be serving Corned Beef and Cabbage; have a traditional beverage, and write the names of your loved ones who have passed in to the Honor Roll Book.
Free admission, Vaccination cards or negative covid tests required to enter.
Then, Part TWO: travel on down Main Street for
6:30-10
with the band
An Irish Ceili is a gathering where there is music, dance, and we will have that and so much more, with the ever-popular Flip O' the Coin, playing old time and Irish music. The guys will call out the dance moves so be prepared to dance!
Also:
- Enter a loved one's name in the Honor Roll Book, which will be read aloud at some point during the night
- Participate in the first WCAB Obelisk Community Art Project: Help us create a memorial of the 2022 Irish Wake!
- Enjoy beverages in both the Grand Ballroom and the Granite Cellar at the Danes hall!

The Calathumpians have held a Traditional Irish Session for many years at Little Fat Gretchen's, during the WCAB Irish Wake. This year, many of these reclusive members will be on hand with a bunch of friends, to play traditional Irish music as well as belt out a bunch of WCAB's traditional Irish singalong songs, and a few Tom Waits, John Prine and other great tunes thrown in! We will have songbooks, and you can join in the singing! This Live on site show will be live on Facebook, so Join Us!
Gretchen will be serving up Corned Beef and Cabbage from 3-6pm, along with other fare including tea and Guinness Stout.

There is always a lot of new NEWS to report from the Arts HUB!
Starting in March, we welcome our newest music teacher, Eric Bestul! Eric is a multi-instrumentalist and music teacher from Waupaca County. He has toured the U.S. and Europe with a multitude of bands playing everything from country to heavy metal.
First and foremost, he believes that music has to be fun, and he wants to share with everyone the joy music brings him.
Eric is currently the owner of Lessons from the Art in Iola where he teaches guitar, bass, mandolin, banjo, harmonica, lap and pedal steel, and ukulele. He is expanding his personal teaching studio to Waupaca via the Arts HUB, and will be offering individual as well as group lessons, including beginner’s ukulele class. Welcome Eric!

*Bring your kid (5 and older) to the HUB on March 9, sign them in, then go ahead and take off/run errands, or just chill while their kid creates!
*Got a kid younger than 5? They are welcome too, but we need you to stay with them during the Creativity Lab!

Intro to Contemporary Art
Ages: 7-12
Registration Deadline: March 14, 2022
This is a beginner-to-intermediate drawing class with clear-cut step-by-step instructions to help achieve a great finished art piece. For the first few classes, please bring one to three pieces of your favorite wrapped candy to do Pop Art Style Candy Wrapper drawing.
We will explore different Contemporary Art styles. First, we’ll dive into Pop Art. It started in the 1950’s. Pop Art focuses on taking simple, everyday objects and using them as subjects for fine art — “art for everyone.” Andy Warhol is the artist credited with starting this movement.

Create a Comic Book: “Imagination Has No Limits” -- Ages 11-Adult
Tuesdays — 3:30-5:30 p.m. — Mar. 22-April 26 6 weeks)
Registration Deadline: Mar. 12, 2022
Students will create a Comic Book, from start to finish. It will have a minimum of 6 pages, plus a front cover, and a back cover. The final Comic Book will be ready for scanning or photocopying. They will write and illustrate a fictional story, based on true events, a memory or a fantasy. The story will make a point, make a statement, or have a moral.
Instructor Booras is a professional artist, who recently took first place in the Celestial Division of the 2021 Mark Gruenwald Comic Creation Challenge.

Silk Fusion: Painting With Fiber,
Ages 12-Adult
Mondays — 5-8 p.m. —Mar. 21 & Mar. 28 (2 classes)
Registration Deadline: Mar. 11, 2022
PART 1 - Explanation of the art form and demonstration of process. Students then will lay out their silk fusion project.
PART 2 - Students will embellish and finish project.
Instructor will supply all necessary supplies to complete at least one project (depending on student’s choice of size and class time limits, more than one is possible). This includes silk fibers and solutions, as well as yarns, fancy threads, beads, buttons, paints, etc., for inclusions and embellishments. Instructor will have two sewing machines for students to share for overstitching and embellishing their project if desired. Instructor also can supply some limited canvases, cardstock and matts for framing, to complete projects.

To thank you for helping us build inclusion and creativity within our community, we wanted to offer an affordable, fun, and creative class for our youth.
Students will have numerous materials available each week in which to create and explore. Teachers will provide minimal instruction allowing students to innovate, create, and design their own masterpieces.

7 weeks of one hour lessons in a small group, where you will learn the basics of this versatile instrument and be playing many songs by the end of the course.

Community Art Project 2022: Obelisks!!!

Here is a sneak-peek at what we have been working on for the 2022 Community Art Project! You will get a chance to work on the first Collaborative Obelisk at the Irish Wake on March 17, and then watch our website for all the details on how you can get a kit to do your own small or large Obelisk! Inspired by Claudia Krumsee's beautiful Obelisks, these creations will all become part of a large installation during ARTicipation Week this summer! We're excited, are you?

Gee's Bend Inspired Hand Sewn Potholder Virtual Workshop
This workshop runs on-demand ending on Wednesday, March 16.
Learn some of the untold history of the Civil Rights Movement while stitching a real, working potholder inspired by the amazing work of the Quilters of Gee's Bend, Alabama. Join Ellen from SewItWorkshop as she demonstrates how to make potholders and also shares the rich history behind this historic and beautiful quilting artwork.

The Waupaca Historical Society is partnering with the Waupaca Area Public Library to offer free art supplies and kits to the community! The Little Free Art Box is located underneath the Little Free Library in front of the Holly History and Genealogy Center. If you have extra art supplies at home, please feel free to donate them to the box by placing them in bags inside.

Wega Arts is getting final footage, and busy editing The Great Weyauwega Train Derailment of 1996. The movie will be screened at the Gerold Opera House on April 22nd and 23rd. Participants will get in free, all others for $5. More information soon! wegaarts.org.

Amoco and the Filling Station March Thursday Generosity Days
|
The Amoco Station and The Filling Station continue their generosity and support of local organizations, by donating 20 cents per gallon/20% of their proceeds on Thursday March 3 to the Rotary Club of Waupaca, and on Thursday, March 17, to the Freddie's Home Plate.
Freddie's Home Plate Many of you are familiar with Club Orlow and the impact Fred Jastromski had on youth sports in the Amherst area. He could often be found in the concession stand during any of the games. As his wife, Mary Jane said, “He lived there.” Help us honor the legacy of a great man and a member of the Wisconsin Tavern League for over 50 years.
Rotary Club of Waupaca, whose mission is to actively support education in the Waupaca area as a means to improve community cooperation and international understanding through the principles of Rotary.'

Jenny, a life-long educator, taught on five different continents in a wide variety of schools. Listen as they discuss differences in international schools as they hop from one unique cultural experience to the next. Each school provides a unique perspective on the world and the globalization of education.

99.1 FM WAUP, Waupaca's independent Community Radio Station is an all volunteer run station that brings our community a unique playlist of music including deep cuts. They also provide community service in the form of announcements and promotions of events and non profit organizations.
WAUP is seeking to find a volunteer who can be a production manager.
- Someone that has a computer and internet access.
- Preferably with experience in working with audio files and audio recording software, but will train.
- Duties would include downloading content via the web: Processing some of the downloaded content through our audio software, and then uploading the finished product to the studio computer.
- This process will take about two hours a week.

The 7th annual Pac-Shara Pursuit will be held on Saturday, March 5, 2022.
Trivia starts at Noon and runs for eight hours!
This is a radio trivia contest you play from home. Start a team and listen along on the radio, call in your answers and have fun!
In 2014 and 2015 three new low power FM radio stations signed on serving the “Pac-Shara” region in Wisconsin. (WauPACa and WauSHARA counties). 105.1, 96.3 and 99.1 FM. While each of these stations has a different mission and philosophy to serve their respective communities, behind the scenes they collaborate and serve as a resource to each other to fulfill their respective mission.
