MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

I'm excited to share some significant updates with you this month, highlighting recent developments in our industry and association.

In case you missed it, BOMA International and BOMI International have merged, aligning management and governance structures to enhance workforce development and education programs. BOMI International will now function as BOMA International’s nonprofit arm, in addition to the BOMA Foundation.

In addition to being part of the BOMA International Federation, we are also proud to be a part of BOMA California, who represents all eight metropolitan BOMA local associations in the state. BOMA California serves as our legislative advocate in Sacramento, addressing member concerns at the statewide level.

This year, BOMA Cal is sponsoring two bills, detailed in the CRE Goes on Offense article below. As we continue tackling issues of importance to our members, please remember that your engagement in grassroots advocacy is essential as we work towards positive legislative outcomes. Together, we can shape policies that benefit our industry and communities.

Through our affiliation with BOMA Cal, we're also active members of CBPA, the California Business Properties Association. CBPA is the designated legislative advocate for ICSC, the California Chapters of the Commercial Real Estate Development Association (NAIOP), the Building Owners and Managers Association of California (BOMA Cal), the Retail Industry Leaders Association (RILA), the Association of Commercial Real Estate – Northern and Southern California (ACRE), and AIR CRE. Visit https://cbpa.com to learn more and get involved.

Every other year, CBPA honors the industry’s best at the Commercial Real Estate Industry Awards Dinner. This is an excellent opportunity to recognize excellence within the industry and celebrate the achievements of your peers. Submit your nominations before April 30, 2024.

As a reminder, your involvement in our association is crucial. Let's continue working together to drive positive change and ensure the ongoing success of our industry.

IRS Demolition Yard Tour

A huge thank you to Interior Removal Specialist Inc. for hosting a tour of their demolition site and special thanks to Richard Ludt for guiding us. Tour attendees had the opportunity to learn more about IRS Demo's operations and commitment to sustainability. From innovative recycling methods to eco-friendly deconstruction techniques, every aspect showed the importance of responsible environmental practices in the demolition industry. Additionally, participating in this event helped LEED certification holders earn valuable continuing education credits.

A big thank you to everyone who attended this experience!

The commitment of the people that I work with every day inspires me to be a better leader.

What is the first ever concert you attended?

The Beatles at Shea Stadium 1964. I had no idea what to expect!

Member Testimonial

“I've been a member of BOMA/GLA now for about 15 years. It's proven very valuable in that I've had an opportunity to tap into a network of practitioners with major experiences to enhance my skills and raise my professional profile. It's worth investing the time at the beginning and through your career because it's a good foundation as well as a good source of continued education.

For instance, I was part of a committee during the global outbreak of coronavirus. Together on calls with a group of our peers, we were all trying to figure out the impact on the industry, how everybody was doing in terms of best practices, and learning new workplace social distancing procedures. Being able to help each other do that was a huge benefit.

The ability to reach out to expertise and peers, no matter what - no matter when, has been a big part of why I continued to be with BOMA for all these years.”

What's Happening in Advocacy

BOMA/GLA Heads to Washington

BOMA/GLA went to Washington, D.C., earlier this year to attend the BOMA International Winter Business Meeting and National Issues Conference with other BOMAs from around the world. This event gives people in our business a chance to meet each other and learn about issues affecting BOMAs worldwide.

On the final day, we took our advocacy to Capitol Hill. One of the most important bills we discussed was H.R. 1491, the Small Business Energy Loan Enhancement Act, and how it would affect our business. Our Board Chair, Gary Hansel, led the discussion.

If H.R. 1491 were passed, more funding would be available for our members to successfully create new energy efficiency projects for their buildings.

By giving national problems a local spin, we help our lawmakers understand how their actions affect our industry. Tell Congress to pass H.R. 1491 by sending a direct letter to your representatives here.

CRE Goes on Offense

Our new lobbyist in the state capitol is wasting no time getting started! He has put forward two time-saving (and money-saving) bills.

The first is Assembly Bill 2433, which would address permit delays by allowing applicants to hire a third-party inspector or plan checker if the project sits for longer than 30 days for a plan check or five days for an inspection.Read the fact sheet.

The second is Assembly Bill 3196, which would improve legal efficiencies in commercial eviction. The bill would set a defined schedule for demurrer hearings and prevent using these hearings as a delay tactic. Read the fact sheet.

Both bills will face opposition from other interest groups, and we need your help to support them. Express your support for AB 2433 by contacting Assemblymember Sharon Quirk-Silva and to support AB 3196, contact Assemblymember Stephanie Nugyen
