PLANNING PHASE

South Beach - Operations Plans

The Wilmette Park District is excited to share its 2025 Lakefront Operations Plans, shaped by community feedback, staff insights, and Board guidance. These updates reflect our commitment to accessibility, affordability, and enhancing visitor experience.


Key Enhancements:

-Adjusting operating hours: 10 AM – 8 PM across all beaches

-Wider beach entrances for improved accessibility and views

-Improved fencing for natural dune preservation

-Maintained cost-effective pricing with added discounts and passes

-Dedicated separation between The Cove & Dog Beach, including SUP/kayak storage

-New designated beach entry benches & free access to The Cove

-Improved signage, guidelines, and staff training for better visitor experience

EXECUTION PHASE

Gillson Park Infrastructure Project

Gillson Park Phase 2: District staff added a fence to the west side of Upper Drive to limit pedestrian access to areas under construction. Signage in the park has also been updated. Storm sewer work resumed the week of March 10.

EXECUTION PHASE

Langdon Shoreline Protection Project

Coordination of the shelter and remaining site work continues between Park District staff, Woodhouse Tinucci, and SmithGroup. Trenching for electrical work is began the week of March 10.


This project is still scheduled for completion in the spring of 2025, before Memorial Day weekend. Click here to learn more about the Langdon Shoreline Protection and Beach Access project.

A D D I T I O N A L

U P D A T E S

PARKS & GROUNDS - The Park District received the grant agreement for Hibbard Park from the IDNR during the week of March 3. Full execution of the agreement is expected in early April. While waiting, the Park District can apply for permits and release bid documents but cannot award bids, order equipment, or start construction. Bids are expected to be released in mid-April. Staff will seek approval at the May Board meeting.


Wilmette Park District is working on a potential Community Solar Project, the District signed a contract with E4, LLC. On March 4, an opportunity for subscription was identified. Documents are currently under legal review. The contract term is up to 20 years, offering benefits including:

  • Zero emissions
  • Lower operating costs
  • Increased solar accessibility
  • Renewable energy usage


GOLF OPERATIONS - Although briefly, Wilmette Golf Club opened March 14 and March 15 while the weather allowed. Golf Camp registration opened on February 18, reaching 90% capacity within an hour, with all spots taken by Wilmette residents.


SUSTAINABILITY - Sustainability staff are expanding partnerships for the District’s spring events. The Rotary Club will host a table at the District’s Earth Day event on April 19, distributing native wildflower seeds. Additionally, the National Wildlife Federation will participate in the Arbor Day tree seedling giveaway on April 25.


FINANCE - As of December 2024, capital spending is projected at $11.4M. No additional capital expenses will be accrued unless deemed material and approved by auditors. Of the 61 projects planned for 2024:

  • 48 have been completed and paid for
  • 2 were canceled
  • 11 will move to the 2025 capital plan
