Proposition U
On Tuesday, April 5, 2022, Ballwin voters will have the chance to vote on Proposition U. Proposition U asks the voters whether or not they wish to establish a local use tax in the City of Ballwin. A local use tax is a tax applied to purchases made online, such as from eBay and Amazon.

Currently, the City of Ballwin collects a 1% local tax on all goods and services purchased from businesses located in Ballwin. However, that is not the case for purchases made online. Right now, the City collects NO tax from online purchases.

More and more sales are occurring online. Since the City of Ballwin has no property tax, we rely heavily on revenues from local sales tax to fund basic services, such as street maintenance, police, recreation facilities and programs, parks, and building safety. The increase in online shopping is compromising this traditional funding source, forcing the City to modernize its revenue sources. The implementation of a use tax would allow the City to maintain its revenue while continuing to provide the high-quality services our residents value.

The City encourages everyone to educate themselves on this important topic prior to election day.
