Columbus, Georgia has been recognized as the 12th best-run city in America for 2025 by WalletHub. According to WalletHub analyst Cassandra Happe, “The best-run cities in America use their budgets most effectively to provide high-quality financial security, education, health, safety, and transportation to their residents. Many of the top cities also have a very low amount of outstanding government debt per capita, which can prevent financial troubles in the future.”

Risk Management is pleased to announce a partnership with the HWC to provide an Athletic Trainer focused on departmental safety and workplace injury prevention. This initiative reinforces our commitment to employee well-being and a safe working environment.

Jamie Croley, our dedicated Athletic Trainer, has already begun visiting various departments, providing valuable assessments of exercise routines to minimize the risk of injuries and identifying potentially unsafe practices in different work environments. His expertise has been instrumental in helping us proactively address potential hazards.

In addition to on-site departmental visits, Jamie is also available to employees who utilize the HWC for individual consultations. You can schedule 1:1 appointments with him on the following days and times:

  • Mondays: 8:00 am - 2:00 pm
  • Thursdays: 8:00 am - 12:00 pm

We encourage all employees to take advantage of this valuable resource to promote their own safety and well-being, as well as contribute to a safer workplace for everyone.

Please contact Risk Management if you would like for Jamie to visit your department for a group assessment or the HWC to schedule a 1:1 appointment.

Your copy should address 3 key questions: Who am I writing for (audience)? Why should they care (benefit)? What do I want them to do (call-to-action)?

Create a great offer by adding words like "free," "personalized," "complimentary," or "customized." A sense of urgency often helps readers take action, so consider inserting phrases like "for a limited time only" or "only 7 remaining!"

Get Happy!

By Leigh Ann Yaughn, LPC

CPD Mental Health Co-Responder

Finding meaning and purpose in life can be challenging. In our fast-paced world, we juggle responsibilities, multitask, and constantly think about the next item on our to-do list. However, slowing down and paying attention to what we are doing—and why—can lead to greater happiness.

Have you ever stopped to notice your actions? When you live according to your own values and focus on what truly matters, you create a sense of fulfillment and joy. The good news is that happiness is not just something that happens to you—it’s something you can learn and cultivate. Managing your mindset, calming your strengths, and creating meaningful relationships all contribute to a happier life.

This can feel overwhelming, but the key is to start small. Setting small, specific goals and developing daily habits makes happiness more attainable. Over time, these habits become second nature, allowing you to build on them and continue growing.

If you’re ready to take intentional steps toward a happier life, consider these 12 practical actions:

1.     Count your blessings

Happy people focus on the positive aspects of life rather than dwelling on the negative. Instead of complaining about your job, be grateful that you have one. Practicing gratitude shifts your perspective and helps you appreciate the good in life.

2.     Carry a smile

Research shows that our facial expressions can influence our emotions. By choosing to smile, you can program yourself to feel happier. A simple smile can also be contagious—when you smile at someone, they are likely to smile back, increasing happiness for both of you.

3.     Speak Affirmations

Affirmations are positive statements that reinforce self-worth, confidence, and a positive outlook. Saying affirmations daily can relieve stress and improve self-esteem. Try telling yourself, “I love improving myself” or “I am too valuable to waste time on self-pity.”

4.     Wake up on your terms

While alarm clocks are often set based on obligations, waking up just a little earlier and establishing a meaningful morning routine can set a positive tone for the day. Taking 30 minutes to enjoy a quiet moment with coffee or engage in a relaxing activity can make a big difference.

5.     Hold back a complaint

Instead of venting frustration or negativity, practice restrain. Choosing peace over complaining can help create a more positive environment for yourself and those around you. Over time, this habit can contribute to a more optimistic outlook on life.

6.     Practice one life improving discipline

Personal growth brings happiness and fulfillment. Choose one area to improve each day, whether it’s exercising, budgeting, or learning something new. Small acts of self-discipline lead to long-term success and happiness.

7.     Use your strengths

We all have unique talents and abilities that bring us joy. Whether it’s playing an instrument, writing, or teaching, embracing and using your strengths daily can increase happiness and self-satisfaction.

8.     Accomplish one important task

Taking control of your day by completing at least one meaningful task fosters a sense of accomplishment. Happy people find satisfaction in being productive and purposeful.

9.     Eat a healthy meal or snack

Nourishing your body with nutritious food contributes to both physical and mental well-being. Making small, healthy choices can positively impact your mood and energy levels.

10. Treat others well

Kindness is a simple yet powerful way to boost happiness. Treating others with respect and compassion not only improves their day but also reinforces positive emotions within yourself. The golden rule—treat others as you wish to be treated—is a timeless guide to happiness.

11. Meditate

Finding time for solitude and reflection is essential in our noisy world. Meditation helps reduce stress, improves focus, and fosters inner peace. Taking even a few minutes each day to connect with yourself can have lasting benefits.

12. Search for benefits in your pain

Everyone faces challenges, but happiness comes from how we respond to them. When going through difficult times, try to find growth opportunities. Even in pain, perseverance is being built, and valuable lessons are being learned (becker, 2013).

Happiness Is a Choice

Happiness is more than just a fleeting feeling—it’s about truly enjoying life and striving to be your best self. By intentionally choosing happiness through small daily actions, you can cultivate a more fulfilling and joyful life. Start today by taking one small step and watch how happiness grows from within.

March Observances

Women's History Month originated from the first International Women's Day on March 8, 1911. In the late 1970s, a "Women's History Week" was organized in Sonoma, California, coinciding with International Women's Day. This gained traction, and in 1980, President Jimmy Carter declared the week of March 8 as National Women's History Week. By 1987, Congress designated March as Women's History Month. The month is now celebrated annually, highlighting women's achievements and contributions, with each year focusing on a specific theme chosen by the National Women's History Alliance.
