~ March 2022 ~
Message from our President . . . . .
Member

Greetings,

Thank you to everyone who has renewed their membership to CVOA. CVOA has had a fairly active winter season of activities so far and is planning more of them for the rest of 2022. The member survey was completed by 180 members and provided valuable input for CVOA planning. A brief summary of results is in this Newsletter.

For the first time in three years an in-person Annual Meeting will take place. This will be a wonderful opportunity to welcome back members to a fun social event. I hope to see many of you at the Annual Meeting and other upcoming activities.

There may be a few openings on the CVOA Board. If any of you are interested or would like additional information, please contact one of the Officers or Board Members.

Wishing everyone a wonderful Spring.

STEVE
Membership Survey
Brief Summary of Survey Results
Overall there were no big surprises. Members were generally pleased with CVOA and the activities it sponsors and its commitment to support the local community.

CVOA signed up many new members. Of current members 45% joined in the last five years. Members over age 65 make up two-thirds of membership-not surprising.

People joined CVOA for the following reasons as might have been expected
  • Meet others
  • TheRange
  • Ski Trips
  • Outdoor activities-hiking/canoe/kayak/camping

Favorite Activities
  • Ski Trips and Range-consistent with why people join
  • Other things attractive to smaller groups of members
  • Social events are popular, both on their own and connected to another activity or event

Fifteen members said they would be willing to lead an activity. CVOA is reaching out to them as it begins developing and planning activities beyond Ski Trips and the Range

Thanks to everyone who submitted a survey. Your input is greatly appreciated.

Yonder Knoll Hike

Show ‘N' Go Hike
Trip Leader: Jan Mildram

Meet at the Stratton Brook Hut Parking lot, just north of the Loaf Access Road.. Head out at 1:05pm. Cleats and/or snowshoes are recommended, depending on the amount of snow. Poles are important for navigating any uneven ground. We travel 15 minutes on the Narrow Gauge Pathway, then about 30 minutes up, some of which is moderately steep, but not tricky related to footing. We see the incredible view for 15 minutes or so. It’s an outstanding panorama of the Crockers, the Loaf, Burnt Mountain, and the peaks of Bigelow. The trip down is about 30 minutes. Total time is no more than 2 hours, so we will be back around 3:00 or so. This is a Show ‘N Go event, so there is no signup required.  We do this no matter the weather.

Friendly dogs are welcome

Range News
Hello All,

A Taste of Spring is getting me excited about shooting. We've had some of our Range Committee folks move permanently to warmer climes. As a result, we are in need of new recruits to help steer the Range. If you have some time to volunteer, we'd love to include you. Please contact me by text or email listed below.

Membership Renewal Reminder! If you have not yet renewed your range membership, do so soon. Your new Range Badge will be going out in early May. If you have not renewed by April, you may not receive your new badge when the gate combination changes. I admit to just renewing my membership the other day so you are not alone if you have been remiss. We want to see you on the range!

Our Pistol and Rifle Ranges will continue to be plowed and accessible during the winter, as is the bathroom which is heated. Please remember to follow all posted rules and shoot safe.

Please note that your 2021 gate code will continue to be in effect through the winter. A new gate code and badges will be issued in early Spring.

Thank you all for your continued support and use of the CVOA Neal Trask Shooting Range.

King's Kids
CVOA received a request from Warren Cook to bring to your attention his personal message regarding the Ski Club King’s Kids Program. Following is an excerpt from his message.

I expect through The Ski Club or The Irregular you have heard about King’s Kids and seen that our now four year effort has raised over $1 million to make skiing/riding affordable for kids in Franklin and Somerset County and down to Jay as well. With the continuing corporatization of skiing and higher and higher prices, it makes this program even more important especially if you care about local kids being able to ski or ride.

Now in its fourth year King’s Kids has invested about a $100,000 in the program, highlights include:
  • 120 kids participating in the Boomauger Program which gives kids skiing on 8 Sundays for $40.00
  • Support for the longtime Ski Skate Program which brings five local elementary schools to Sugarloaf throughout the winter
  • Support for Titcomb, Spruce and Baker Mountains’ youth programs
I am so excited and impressed with the program and the need for it that my family intends to add very significantly to our initial contribution which included a $500,000 matching grant from the Cummings Trust which was matched by many of your members. Please join me with a contribution to King’s Kids so we can sustain and grow this important program.

You can support this program by going to the Ski Club Website (https://www.sugarloafskiclub.org) and clicking on “Donate Now”

Thanks for your consideration. Respectfully, Warren Cook Sugarloafer since ’65
