1..Dictionaire Hermetique (Hermetic Dictionary) contenant l explication des termes, fables, enigmes, emblemes & manieres de parler des vrais philosophes. Accompagné de deux Traitez singuliers et utiles aux Curieux de l Art. Par un Amateur de la Science attributed to Salmon William published in 1695. First Edition. Text in French. This is an early alchemical and hermetic dictionary believed to have been attributed to Salmon William (1644–1713), "an English empiric doctor and a writer of medical texts. He advertised himself as a "Professor of Physick". Salmon held an equivocal place in the medical community. He led apothecaries in opposing attempts by physicians to control the dispensing of medicines, and as a result was derided by physicians as "the King of the Quacks”. This particular copy was gifted in 1793 to the Rev. Burgiss Alisson by a friend and pupil named Edwin Coolin. Allisson was an illustrious man of letters and inventor known for his correspondence with Thomas Jefferson and secretary of the American Philosophical Society. Allison would further become the chaplain for the U.S. House of Representatives. Hardcover with heavy shelfwear and foxing to endsheets.
