| | The Mantle - High School Youth Ministry | |
Hi there, St. Brigid Parish! Happy Lent, and please know of our prayers for you!
We have had a busy month here at The Mantle!
We have done lots of fun things like bowling, live action Pac-Man, a movie charade game, ultimate basketball trick shots, and crazy Telestrations! We have covered topics of “God in My Every Day Life” (how God can encounter us in our daily life), “Who Am I?” (who we are as children of God), “What is Repentance?” (Father Black came and talked to us, and both priests were present for a time of Eucharistic Adoration and confession), and “Living in Freedom” (what a life of freedom looks like with Jesus, Jayden Remias, a Catholic social media evangelist, came and spoke to us!).
We are also entering into a weekly Lenten study with Eucharistic Adoration and having discussions about Lenten related topics.
As we are drawing close to the end of our school year, we are so excited and grateful to be inviting our 8th graders in to experience a night at The Mantle! If you have an 8th grader, they are welcome to join us on April 6th from 6:30-8:30 in Hendricks Hall!
To the families of the Class of 2025 seniors: you are invited on May 4 to a senior honoring brunch! You will be receiving a hard copy invite at the end of March in the mail!
As always, thank you so much for your prayers for the youth of our parish and Church, and please know of our prayers for you!
In Christ,
The Mantle High School Youth Ministry

| | Play Like a Champion Training for Parents | |
SBAA invites all parents to participate in an upcoming diocesan “Play Like a Champion” training course, designed for coaches and required by the diocese for all CYO coach volunteer roles. This training also satisfies the “Parent Like a Champion” requirement for athletes’ CYO participation. The “Play Like a Champion” course is a 3 hour training, serving as an informational workshop providing coaches and parents with best in practice skills for building great teams and engaged athletes through the coach’s role.
As St Brigid of Kildare continues to grow sports offerings and expand to younger athletes, the “Play Like a Champion” training course is highly encouraged for parents interested in having their children participate in St Brigid athletics. This course is a one-time requirement for parents in the diocesan league (thereby this does not need to be completed for each athlete, only once per parent, per family). To learn more about the “Play Like a Champion” course, please visit our diocesan athletics webpage. To register to attend, sign up here.

| | Purified - Event with Jason Evert at St. Joan of Arc | |
April 27, 2025
This is a double feature event combining Purified and Gender & the Theology of Your Body into a retreat event.
Purified brings parents and teens (13+) together to discover God’s plan for love and opens up an opportunity for them to continue the discussion about this important topic at home, in a healthy and easy way with resources that work. The event includes a new version of Jason’s renowned talk Love or Lust, where he mixes humor with down-to-earth practicality that removes any awkwardness, making the difficult conversations about love much easier. Your family will leave with an understanding of the good news of chastity, a healthy sense of self-worth, and the ability, if needed, to start again.
Gender and the Theology of Your Body will follow after a short break. This talk asks, “What’s the meaning of sex, gender, and the human body?” The truth of masculinity and femininity are being questioned like never before. Discover how your body as a man or woman reveals your identity and calling. This talk is for teens and adults and provides the opportunity to discuss this difficult topic facing teens and families today.
This event includes Eucharistic Adoration, praise and worship, and an opportunity to receive the sacrament of Reconciliation. This format transforms a couple of talks into a retreat for the family, allowing them to encounter the source of purity, healing, and renewal, Jesus Christ.
This event is hosted by St. Peter St. Joan of Arc Parish, St. Brigid of Kildare, and St. Mary Delaware and will take place at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church. The parish will be providing dinner before the first talk beginning at 4:30pm.
(Please note St. Brigid of Kildare students being Confirmed in 2025 may purchase tickets at a discounted rate and should register using a different link provided in an email from Andrea Komenda.)
| | The Spirit of Lenten Mortification | |
By Fr. Michael Goodyear
Praised be Jesus Christ! We have begun some brief reflections under the subtitle of The Spirit of Lenten Mortification. That last word probably stirs up many unpleasant connotations.
The Catholic Encyclopedia explains mortification with the following words:
Mortification is one of the methods which Christian asceticism employs in training the soul to virtuous and holy living. The term originated with St. Paul, who traces an instructive analogy between Christ dying to a mortal and rising to an immortal life, and His followers who renounce their past life of sin and rise through grace to a new life of holiness. “If you live after the flesh”, says the apostle, “you shall die, but if through the spirit you mortify the deeds of the flesh, you shall live” (Rom., viii, 13; cf. also Col., iii, 5, and Gal., v, 24).
That seems straightforward enough, doesn’t it! One of the most important words and key ideas in that paragraph is that we are training the soul when we renounce ourselves. Jesus Christ made it clear that “if any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. (Matthew 16:24). It is a theme of our Christian life both in and outside of Lent.
We should, however, be careful to avoid falling into the pitfall that Lent is a sad season. I think that some Catholics might even be tempted to see Lent as a morbid season. Dying to ourselves should be something joyful. It is in the spirit of St. John Paul II who said that Lent is a time of feasting, that is, feasting on graces in our spiritual lives.
Another key phrase in that forementioned text from St. Paul says, “but if through the spirit you mortify the deeds of the flesh, you shall live.” In other words, it is through the spirit, through grace, through the inspiration of God, that we are moved to mortification. God longs to sanctify us! As He would say to St. Faustina: Without special help from Me, you are not even capable of accepting My graces (738). So, what are we waiting for! Let us allow Christ to give us special help! And let us make room for the spirit and grace of God to stir up in us a spirit of Lenten mortification so that we shall live!
St. Brigid of Kildare, pray for us!

The Way of the Cross
"The Way of the Cross happens in the heart of a city where millions of people carry their daily cross, most of the time dreadfully alone: “If God exists, He has nothing to do with my daily life.” This is the true cross of every day, the cross of a person abandoned only to himself in his innermost need for never-ending love, truth, beauty and justice. We need the presence of “God with us,” Jesus every day. And Jesus, because of the sacrifice of His cross and because of His resurrection, dwells among us, every day." – Servant of God, Fr. Luigi Giussani, Founder of Communion and Liberation. Join Bishop Earl K. Fernandes on the Way of the Cross this Good Friday, April 18th from 2:00pm to 4:00 pm at St. Joseph Cathedral.
