A Guide to Spring Birds in Pennsylvania

Listen for cuckoos this time of year.

With spring's approach, we’re welcoming back a whole suite of birds that haven’t been around since early fall. While you’re out and about, keep an eye (and ear) out for the return of some of our most charismatic birds. Jere Knight: Conservation Advocate of Bucks County

This Women's History Month, we're celebrating Jere Knight.

Jere Knight was a national fencing champion, a World War II intelligence officer, and edited her husband's famous book "Lassie Come Home." But in Bucks County, she's remembered for protecting Cooks Creek. Learn about the woman behind the Jere Knight Trail at our Fuller-Pursell Nature Preserve.

Heritage Conservancy Trains a New Crop of Environmental Educators

Hourly educators help supplement Heritage Conservancy's vital community education work

Heritage Conservancy has hired and trained a new group of part-time educators to expand the reach of our environmental education programs in Bucks County.

“Our education team is gearing up for our busiest time of year,” says Shannon Fredebaugh-Siller, Director of Education and Community Programs at Heritage Conservancy. There are 30 education and community programs on the calendar for April alone!

Celebrating Our Volunteers

In 2025, 349 volunteers contributed over 3,000 hours to Heritage Conservancy's mission. At our annual volunteer appreciation event, attendees ate, chatted, and toured historic Aldie Mansion. We also recognized four volunteers and one corporate partner who went above and beyond.

Meet this year's award winners and read about the event.

Birds of the Grasslands: A Call for Conservation

Eastern Meadowlark (Sturnella magna) is a grassland bird that is in steep decline.

Grassland bird populations have declined by 53 percent in the past 50 years. Many grassland bird species are at a tipping point where, if we continue the same path, they are expected to lose another 50 percent of their population in the next 50 years.

Why are grassland birds declining so rapidly, and what can we do?

In the Community

“Growing up in the Philadelphia area and spending time with my grandfather in Bucks County, I developed an early and lasting appreciation for the open spaces and natural landscapes that define the region. I'm proud to support an organization dedicated to protecting these special places and honoring the local history woven into this landscape."
