7 Ideas to Help Raise Eco-Conscious Kids

Gardening is a great way to draw kids into respect for the environment.

"The environmental challenges that we face across the globe can feel overwhelming for us as adults," says Shannon Fredebaugh-Siller, Community Engagement Programs Manager at Heritage Conservancy.

"I can only imagine how helpless kids may feel about some of it, so giving them tools and strategies to help in their little but impactful ways can be so empowering!"

As a naturalist, mother, and Environmental Literacy advocate and educator, Shannon has some great suggestions to help put power in the small hands of your (grand)kids and sew the seeds of change.

Heritage Conservancy and Warrington Township Conserve Nearly 175 Acres of Open Space

The easements are designed to protect natural resources while allowing agricultural uses, public trails, and recreation.

Reaching an incredible milestone, Heritage Conservancy recently partnered with Warrington Township to ensure that open space dedicated as part of residential developments will remain open and accessible to the public, as it was intended.

Several years ago, Warrington Township Supervisors enacted a zoning change that provides an incentive for developers to cluster planned homes to use as little of the land as possible while protecting the bulk of it as open space.

To guarantee that the open space is protected, they reached out to Heritage Conservancy to serve as the holder of conservation easements on four properties that utilized the conservation development zoning, protecting nearly 175 acres of open space.

14 Spring Ephemerals to Look for in the Woods This Spring

Now is the time to see these fleeting beauties in the nearby woods.

Every spring, a miniature forest blooms on the forest floor in the window of warmth and sunlight before the woody giants put out their leaves. These are the spring ephemerals here one season and gone the next!

They compete for resources with other plants by being small and fast, providing food for wildlife that is awakening from winter. They also provide us humans a nice welcome back into the woods. From yummy to bold to unique to downright silly, look for these emerging plants now!

Martha Mercer's Community Engagement

Martha Mercer was engaged in groups working to improve and protect Bucks County.

This Women’s History Month, we take a moment to remember Martha Mercer, the matriarch of Aldie Mansion. When she lived in Doylestown with her husband William, Martha took an active interest in Bucks County community improvements.

She joined the executive committee of the Roosevelt Park Association in Bristol in 1932 and served on a committee to help preserve the Delaware Canal, working alongside state senators to protect it. Martha also joined the Council for Protection of Natural Beauty in Pennsylvania, an organization that encouraged others to protect natural resources and the beautiful views that make Bucks County special.

Her home now serves as the headquarters for our efforts to protect those landscapes and waterways.

A New Program to Plant Trees

The rooting and growth of a tree is a perfect metaphor for a young marriage and a powerful symbol of hope for the future. By planting a tree for each wedding celebrated at Aldie Mansion in 2024, we hope to help these events make an added impact in the community and to more closely connect couples and their families with our mission.

We will plant a sapling at one of our Nature Preserves for each wedding held at Aldie Mansion as part of our reforestation efforts, and we will even host a tree-planting volunteer day this fall for newlyweds who want to get their hands dirty.

Testimonial

"We were both raised and have made our home in Bucks County, for nearly 70 years. Preserving the beautiful countryside that we remember on rides when we were growing up, and the historical places in Bucks County, have become very important to us. We feel strongly that we need to make sure the Bucks County we remember from our youth continues for future generations.

We have chosen to financially support Heritage Conservancy during our lifetimes so we can see the results of our contributions. Also, we are hopeful that our children and others see our passion and experience the same connection with Heritage Conservancy themselves, which will allow the organization to continue and grow its important work during our lifetimes and beyond."
