Our Favorite Feel-Good Story of the Month

When one of our rescue partners runs out of space, we’re ready to step in and help pets get the second chance they deserve. This month, we welcomed Dump Truck and his six siblings into our care. Thanks to the support of our community, they are now safe, receiving the care and love they need, and finding forever homes. Moments like these remind us that working together saves lives and gives pets like Dump Truck the fresh start they’ve been waiting for!

March Adoptions

This month, we celebrated 78 adoptions and 28 transfers, giving so many deserving animals a fresh start. Each adoption represents a life changed, not just for the pets who found loving homes, but for the families who welcomed them. Our rescue partnerships also allowed us to extend our reach, helping even more animals move one step closer to the futures they deserve. We are so grateful to our adopters, rescue partners, and supporters who make this lifesaving work possible every single day!

Welcoming Our New Executive Director

We’re excited to share that Kathy Jones has been selected as the new executive director of the Gloucester-Mathews Humane Society and will begin her role on April 13. A Gloucester resident with more than 25 years of nonprofit leadership experience, Kathy brings a strong background in finance, operations, and strategic growth, along with a lifelong passion for animal welfare.



In her new role, she will lead our dedicated staff and volunteers while guiding the continued growth of The Williams Center and expanding our impact across the community.

We are thrilled to welcome Kathy to the GMHS family and look forward to this exciting new chapter together!

Bee’s Second Chance

You may remember Bee from one of our recent #FiveDollarFriday campaigns, a sweet boy with a big need and an even bigger heart. Thanks to the incredible generosity of our community, Bee received the support he needed to move forward with surgery today.

He went into surgery surrounded by love and backed by an entire community cheering him on. Moments like this are a powerful reminder of what we can accomplish together—turning compassion into action and giving animals like Bee the care they deserve.

We’ll continue to keep you updated on Bee’s recovery, but for now, we are simply so grateful. Thank you for showing up for him and for every animal who needs us!

Our lifesaving work doesn’t stop at our shelter doors—it extends into the homes of our incredible foster volunteers. Right now, we are in urgent need of fosters to help care for animals who may be too young, recovering from medical procedures, or simply in need of a quiet place to decompress. Even if you can’t commit long-term, you can still make a huge impact by taking a dog out for a Doggy Day Out or host a weekend slumber party to give them a break from the shelter and a chance to shine. Fostering saves lives by opening up space and giving pets the one-on-one care they need to thrive. We provide supplies, guidance, and support—you provide the love. If you’ve ever considered fostering, now is the perfect time to step in and make a difference!

Shakers is a smart and sensitive Hound mix who is currently thriving in a foster home after finding the loud, busy kennel environment a bit overwhelming. He is ready to find his permanent place on your sofa!

Upcoming Events

Kitten season is here, and the tiniest members of our shelter need your help. Join the Gloucester-Mathews Humane Society for a Kitten Shower on April 4 from 1–2 PM at our shelter located at 6620 Jackson Lane in Gloucester. Bring donations like canned cat pâté food, powdered milk replacement (KMR), playpens, or Purina Kitten Chow to help care for vulnerable kittens. Enjoy games, crafts, cake, a photo booth, and learn how you can become a kitten foster. You can even name a future kitten for a $25 donation. Your support helps us save fragile newborn kittens and give them the chance to grow strong and find loving homes!

Shelter Pet Spotlight - Angus

Meet Angus! This handsome 10-month-old grey and white boy likes to play it cool at first. He can be a bit standoffish when you’re just getting to know him and prefers to take introductions slow. The quickest way to break the ice? Food. Angus has a serious soft spot for snacks and never turns down a tasty treat.

With patience and gentle attention, Angus is learning that being pet can actually be pretty wonderful. Once he feels safe—and especially if there’s a soft blanket nearby—his affectionate side comes out. Settle in with something cozy, and you may find Angus snuggled up beside you, enjoying quiet cuddles and the comfort he’s learning to trust.
