March 2025 Critter Chronicles

Our Favorite Feel-Good Story of the Month

Winston was found as a stray on a back road in February. Winston had no collar and was covered in flea dirt. He was emaciated, dehydrated, and his dewclaw was curling into his paw. Our dedicated team immediately jumped into action to give him the love and care he needed. We are so happy to share that in March, Winston met his match! He is living his best life with his family, and we could not be happier for him.

March Adoptions

In March, our incredible team found homes for 68 pets! We are deeply grateful for everyone who has chosen to adopt and open up their homes to animals in need. Congratulations to all of our newest alumni and their adopters!

March Shelter Snapshot

The generous support of staff, volunteers, and donors enables GMHS to provide daily care, cover special medical needs, foster animals in homes as needed, and arrange transportation to adoption-guaranteed partners.

Humane Heroes WANTED!

Snuggle puppies and kittens, and learn something too! There are still spots open for our spring and summer camp sessions. Be sure to take advantage and secure your camper's spot today!

Call us at 804-693-5520, email outreach@gmhumanesociety.org, or stop by the shelter Tuesday-Sunday from 12-5 PM.

Foster families provide shelter animals the extra attention and time in a home that they need to recover from illness or injury, have a break from the shelter, or in the case of kittens or puppies, the time required to reach that 2-month mark and be ready for adoption. GMHS has foster opportunities that include fostering: underage or under socialized kittens/puppies, neonatal kittens that need bottle feeding every two to six hours depending on their age, animals that need a break from the shelter, animals with special behavioral needs, and animals recovering from a medical procedure or illness. Compassionate Community

Many thanks to our friends at Walmart Gloucester and Store Manager Rick Helton for their generous donation of books for our Rescue Readers and Pet Story Time programs! We are so grateful for your support! GMHS Volunteer Donna Cloutier is pictured with the new stories.

Thank you to our friends at Coast Live for sharing your hearts for homeless pets! We were thrilled to come on the show during Adopt-A-Pet Week. We appreciate your support, and Primo and Una loved the spotlight. Click here to watch the segment!

We want to give a big shoutout to Emergency Pest Control, Inc. for their generous donation of a pizza party to our hardworking animal shelter staff! Your kindness and support mean the world to us and to the animals we care for every day. Because of businesses like yours, we can continue our mission with full hearts (and full bellies)!

Huge thank you to the Petfinder Foundation for awarding Gloucester-Mathews Humane Society with a 2025 Dog Enrichment Grant! Our pups like Myrtle are so excited for their new toys, which help to keep them happy until finding their forever family. We appreciate your support!

Shelter Pet Spotlight - Diesel

Meet Diesel! He is a 5 year old German Shepherd and weighs around 70lbs. Diesel is very friendly and loves everyone he meets. He is active, so he would enjoy a yard to run and play in, to go out on hikes or even the beach. Once he gets his "zoomies" out, he is very affectionate and thinks he is a lap dog! In his previous home, Diesel lived with other dogs and young children and did well, and he is already house trained. Diesel is the best boy and we can't wait for him to find his forever family!

During kitten season, GMHS provides food, shelter, and vet care to dozens of kittens and mamas each month! This year’s season has already begun, and pictured are just a few of the babies in our care.

Your gift today supports our mission to save and transform the tiniest of lives. Your donation will allow us to purchase powdered milk replacement needed for kittens found without mothers to be bottle fed, and Purina Kitten Chow and canned food to keep their bellies full as they grow and thrive. Your support will ensure each kitten is vaccinated, spayed/neutered and microchipped before making their heart connection. Each dollar given makes a difference in saving even more lives!
