COMMANDER'S CORNER
Matthew Kampainen, DAV WI Commander

The future is so bright, we got to wear shades!

As I indicated before, the future is beginning to look bright again! Remember, a year ago, we were all in unknown territory, just attempting to put our best foot forward while not jeopardizing ourselves, our families, or friends to a life-taking microbe. As Veterans & Warriors, we know that we are always ready to stand up against those enemies of our Nation. However, it is hard to battle something you cannot see, but personal contact can be life-ending. While many of us fell into the high-risk category, the silver lining is this also placed us in a high priority to receive the vaccine. Despite receiving the vaccine, we must also remain vigilant about it. While we have been vaccinated, we can also be a carrier for it.

Spring is teasing us with the weather. Baseball teams are going to Spring training and things starting to look normal, including the fast-approaching DAV District Conferences! It is that time of year. The dates for the five District Conferences can be found on our website events calendar. I strongly encourage all District meetings to utilize established safety COVID-19 protocols.

This last year was a challenge. These District meetings can be inspirational. We can learn how our fellow Chapters weathered the COVID-19 storm. The DAV mission is as much a part of us as our heartbeat and those whom we love. Despite the dire impact of a global pandemic, we fought through it and still connected with the DAV mission & our fellow veterans.
District meetings are also a great time to get the latest information from our Department leadership team. Whether it is current legislative priorities in Washington, recruiting new members, or the latest in LVAP.

We also have members who are boldly stepping forward and vying for Department elected positions. District meetings provide an opportunity to engage with them plus listen to their personal stories and vision for the future.

In closing, I thank every one of you for making a difference in the lives of veterans. Despite the treacherous and lethal power of COVID-19, you never forgot about them. Your efforts ensured these heroes continued to lead their lives with respect and dignity. See you at the District meetings!

FROM THE DAV DEPARTMENT ADJUTANT LARRY HILL

Later this month we begin our District Meetings. Districts 1, 3, and 5 are required to conduct elections for an Executive Committee Member, Alternate Executive Committee Member, Benefits Protection Team Member, Nominating Committee Member, and Alternate Nominating Committee Member. All Districts are required to review and/or appoint members to the following Convention Committees – Adjutant of the Year, Chapter of the Year, Rules Committee, and Credentials Committees.

We will be deciding on conducting the convention in early April. We will have the State Convention but not sure on the length or if it will be at this time. There is some essential business that must be accomplished. Once decision is made, we will notify everyone and provide a tentative agenda.
We recently received a reminder from DAV National Headquarters on Safeguarding Membership Lists and Access to our Members. This requirement is stated in Article 19, Section 19.2 of the DAV National Bylaws. We must continue to ensure we are following this guidance at all levels in the Department.

For anyone running for Department Officer position, make sure you get a Bio/Résumé completed and submitted to State Headquarters and the District Executive Committeepersons. This is important information that will be provided to the Convention Nomination Committee and at the District Meetings. Any Department member in good standing can run for any position.

COVID 19 is finally trending down in Wisconsin. More shots are being administered, yet we have a way to go before we get to where we need to be, herd immunity. We must still comply with CDC guidelines and ensure our members remain safe and healthy.
