March District Newsletter
Greetings!

Can you believe in a little over three short months we'll be wrapping up the 2016-17 school year? As I look ahead, I am very excited about an additional learning opportunity for our district families beginning this fall.

A s we announced earlier this week, the Wauwatosa School Board has approved plans to add a second elementary STEM program in the district, this time at Underwood Elementary. The program, which will begin in the 2017-18 school year, will be known as USTEM. The curriculum will be modeled off of what students and staff have at Wauwatosa STEM (WSTEM).  One distinction between the two is USTEM will be a program within Underwood, with an advisory board, versus a charter school, as WSTEM is.

In a recent news release, the Department of Public Instruction (DPI) noted:
  •  Wisconsin’s 2016 public school graduates took 21,863 STEM AP exams, an increase of more than 1,100 from the previous year.

  • Five of the 10 most popular AP exams in Wisconsin are in the STEM fields (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics): Biology, Calculus AB, Chemistry, Physics 1: Algebra-Based, and Statistics.
This is yet another affirmation of our efforts as a district when it comes to STEM classes and programs and our pursuit of offering you options to personalize your child's educational path.

If you're interested in learning more about USTEM, be sure to read below for details including upcoming informational sessions.

Sincerely,

Phil Ertl
Superintendent

USTEM Informational Sessions
There is still time to sign up for informational sessions about the USTEM program! The first session is tonight, Monday, March 6th.

These sessions for the STEM program at Underwood will be held at WSTEM to allow parents to view an existing elementary STEM program.

The informational sessions will be:

Where: WSTEM, 1060 Glenview Avenue

Who: Any interested Wauwatosa School District family

In an effort to broaden the STEM opportunities for students in the district, there will be a lottery for entrance into the USTEM program. This means students do not need to be an existing student at Underwood.

To help us plan for these evenings, please sign up HERE to attend an informational session.
