During National Senior Nutrition Month, TCOA Raises Awareness of Nutrition Services for Older Adults

Healthy food and good nutrition are essential for older adults to maintain health, independence and quality of life as they age. What we eat supports physical strength and brain health. Proper nutrition helps reduce the risk of chronic disease, supports immune function and maintains cognitive health.

Food nourishes more than the body—it also supports connection. Shared meals and nutrition programs bring people together, boosting mood and reducing isolation and loneliness.

During National Senior Nutrition Month, TCOA has joined USAging and the Eldercare Locator, an information and referral center for older adults and family caregivers that is funded by the U.S. Administration for Community Living, to raise awareness of the nutrition services it provides to the community.

It can be challenging for many older adults to get the healthy and nutritious foods needed to maintain physical and cognitive health. This can lead to poor health outcomes. Proper nutrition is critical to reduce chronic illness, improve immune system functioning and enhance cognition. Food also brings people together, boosting mood and decreasing feelings of isolation and loneliness.

If you need help arranging home-delivered meals, finding a meal in the community or need nutrition advice or support, TCOA can help! Call 517-887-1440 or visit tcoa.org to learn more.

Volunteer Spotlight

Picture of Betty

The Volunteer Spotlight for March is... Betty Lowe, a Meals on Wheels Volunteer!

About Betty:

Betty Lowe has been a Meals on Wheels Volunteer since January 2009.

Despite vision problems, Betty continues to provide this invaluable service to the residents of Serenity Place in Grand Ledge. She is friendly, caring, reliable, and always willing to fill in for other volunteers when the need arises.

Betty has a long history of service to others, visiting church members in hospitals, volunteering for the church in any needed capacity, providing support and assistance to anyone in need.

One of Betty’s first memories from age three is of her Mother helping a little girl. Betty and her Mother were walking home from the store in Wichita, Kansas when they came across a little girl crying. Betty’s Mother immediately put down the groceries and opened a bag of marshmallows and gave one to the little girl to take her mind off her troubles. Her Mother spent her life in service to others, and Betty picked up right where she left off. She once commented that if she reaches the point that she can’t help people, then it’s time to go. At nearly 100 years old and still volunteering, she sure isn’t ready to go!

✨ Thank you, Betty, for bringing smiles and meals to so many in the community! ✨
