Are you part of a business, community group, house of worship/faith-based group, sorority/fraternity, book club, or just about any kind of group that is seeking opportunities to make a difference locally? You could become an official Meals on Wheels Route Sponsor!

Make a direct impact in your community with Tri-County Office on Aging’s Meals on Wheels Program by building a team to fill a Meals on Wheels route weekly or monthly (or more!) Then “hit the road” around lunchtime and personally deliver meals to participants in your community. Don’t forget to represent by wearing your company or group swag!

As a Meals on Wheels Team, You Will:

  1. Keep track of and schedule volunteers to ensure coverage for each of your scheduled routes.
  2. Ensure that all who will be volunteering complete TCOA's required volunteer application.
  3. Maintain communication with the Meals on Wheels staff regarding route coverage and volunteers.
  4. Build new connections with individuals in the community while knowing you are making a difference. YOU may be a participant’s only human connection that day.
  5. Receive recognition as a sponsor in Tri-County Office on Aging’s Annual Report.

This is a big need and a great way to give back while building new friendships with community members (not to mention strengthening friendships within your team!)

A Once-in-a-Century Birthday!

Last month, TCOA celebrated the 100th birthday of a Dining Site participant - Mr. Edgar Moore! Mr. Moore not only received a cake and many well-wishes and congratulations, but even had a drop-in visit from Mayor Andy Schor, who wished him a happy birthday and declared February 22, 2025 "Edgar Moore Day"!

Thank you, Mr. Moore, for being a part of our community and letting us celebrate your big day with you!

Wishing you a fantastic 100th year of life!

Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment:

Only One More Month to Enroll!

Medicare Advantage Plan Open Enrollment is January 1 - March 31!

Individuals who are currently enrolled in a Medicare Advantage Plan can change their coverage during this time. Reasons why a person might want to change their coverage include:

  • Lower costs for medications
  • Network accepted by medical providers
  • Lower copays for provider visits and procedures
  • Broader coverage for extra benefits including vision, dental, and over the counter supplies

If you are in a Medicare Advantage Plan, during this period you can:

  • Switch to another Medicare Advantage Plan
  • Drop your Medicare Advantage Plan and return to Original Medicare

During this period, you can't:

  • Switch from Original Medicare to a Medicare Advantage Plan
  • Join a separate Medicare drug plan if you have Original Medicare
  • Switch from one Medicare drug plan to another if you have Original Medicare

You can only make ONE change during this period, and any changes will be effective the first of the month after the plan receives your request.

To learn more, visit Medicare.gov or schedule an appointment with a Counselor at TCOA to discuss your coverage options by contacting (517) 887-1416.

Volunteer Spotlight

Meet Barbara – this month’s Volunteer Spotlight!

Barbara was born and raised in Lansing. She is married to the love of her life, Johnny. They are celebrating their 35th Wedding Anniversary this April!

During her lifetime, Barbara has had several jobs – beginning as a 4th Grade Teacher. She later worked for the State of Michigan in both the Treasury and MESC departments. She was later employed with General Motors and retired from her position there. One job that Barbara has done for her entire adult career has been teaching fitness classes, which she still does.

In 2018, Barbara read an article about A Matter of Balance, one of TCOA's Evidence-Based Programs, in her church bulletin. She was curious and decided to take the class. She learned so much about how to improve her balance through exercise. This class also discussed in detail acknowledging and understanding the fear of falling that we have all thought about at one time or another. Barbara learned proven tools to overcome the thoughts and concerns she had about the fear of falling. These tools include specific exercises to strengthen the core, improve balance, and modify thoughts so that we can still do the activities we enjoy as we grow older.

After taking this class, Barbara wanted to be a part of this eye-opening program and became trained as a Matter of Balance coach. Her goal is to share this valuable knowledge with others in the community.

Barbara shares that it is an honor to be a part of such a wonderful program. A Matter of Balance changes lives for the better.
