The Jacob Edwards Library is honoring
Women's History Month with an exhibition of art, crafts and handwork created by local artists. This annual group show celebrates the exceptional talent of artists based within a 20-mile radius of Southbridge, and will feature multi-media works. The exhibition will be on display throughout the month of March.
For our tween and teen-age patrons, we will celebrate
Teen Tech Week the week of March 3-9. Stop by the Library to learn about the electrifying technical offerings available here and on our website!
The Children's Room will be celebrating
Dr. Suess' birthday on National Read Across America Day this morning. However, the program we had planned with special guest Pamela Garde and her guide dog Ume, has been postponed due to the weather!
We will be re-scheduling!
The annual Friends of the Jacob Edwards Library book sale will be held from Thursday, March 28 through Saturday, March 30. Stop in for great deals on your favorite books, movies and music. Adult and children's titles will be available.
We are excited to announce that the number of subscribers to our monthly newsletter has eclipsed 1500. The newsletter is a great way to stay informed of opportunities for learning, making, playing and communicating at the Library.
There is always something going on or something to do at the library! Feel free to drop in anytime!

In honor of
Women's History Month, the
Women's Art & Crafts Show highlights the creative works of local artists. This multi-media display will feature a variety of artworks, as creators showcase their talents in fiber art, painting, ceramics, photography, calligraphy and more. This exhibition is a testament to the wide-ranging artistry that exists within a 20-mile radius of Southbridge. We invite all visitors to discover more about local artists and crafters throughout the month of March.
An Opening Reception will be held on Thursday, March 7 at 6:30 pm. All are welcome, light refreshments will be served.

The Jacob Edwards Library is pleased to present author Ben Goldfarb. We are delighted he accepted our invitation to present in Southbridge while he is visiting the area. The event is free and open to the public. All are welcome!
Ben Goldfarb is an independent environmental journalist and the author of Eager: The Surprising, Secret Life of Beavers and Why They Matter (Chelsea Green Publishing, 2018), which the Washington Post called "a masterpiece of a treatise on the natural world." He holds a Masters of Environmental Management from the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies and a B.A. in English and Environmental Studies from Amherst College.
Copies of the book will be available at the event for purchase from Booklovers Gourmet. A book signing will be conducted after the presentation.
In Eager, environmental journalist Ben Goldfarb reveals that our modern idea of what a healthy landscape looks like and how it functions is wrong, distorted by the fur trade that once trapped out millions of beavers from North America's lakes and rivers. The consequences of losing beavers were profound: streams eroded, wetlands dried up, and species from salmon to swans lost vital habitat. Today, a growing coalition of "Beaver Believers"-including scientists, ranchers, and passionate citizens-recognizes that ecosystems with beavers are far healthier, for humans and non-humans alike, than those without them. From the Nevada deserts to the Scottish highlands, Believers are now hard at work restoring these industrious rodents to their former haunts. Eager is a powerful story about one of the world's most influential species, how North America was colonized, how our landscapes have changed over the centuries, and how beavers can help us fight drought, flooding, wildfire, extinction, and the ravages of climate change. The Jacob Edwards Library is pleased to present Dr. Beth O'Leary Anish.
Dr. O'Leary Anish will uncover two fascinating, yet largely unknown fiction authors: Harry Sylvester (whose mother was Irish American, daughter of translator Jeremiah Curtin) and Ellin Berlin (wife of Irving Berlin, and heiress to her Irish grandfather's silver mining fortune; her maiden name was Mackay).
While Sylvester and Berlin both wrote multiple novels, this talk will focus on Sylvester's Moon Gaffney (1947), and Berlin's Lace Curtain (1948). Both novels provide examples of Irish-American authors thinking about their changing communities in the post-World War II years.
Dr. O'Leary Anish is Associate Professor of English at Community College of Rhode Island. Her areas of academic interest are contemporary Irish and Irish-American Literature, Literature of the American Immigrant Experience and Post-Colonial Theory.

Beginning Saturday, March 2 at 9:30 am
The Jacob Edwards Library is pleased to announce a new program: Saturday Chess Club. This drop-in club will be held on Saturday mornings in the reference area of the Library. All are welcome to attend!
Instructor Ben Marinelli will lead attendees through chess strategy, and guests will be able to test their skills using available game boards. For those who wish to time their play, four newly acquired clocks are also on hand.

National Read Across America Day with special Guest Pamela Garde and her guide dog Ume!
Special Event POSTPONED
Pamela Garde, is a member of General Federation of Women's Clubs and GFWC/CT Newington/Wethersfield Woman's Club. She is the club chairman of Public Issues, which promotes safety.
Pam will read Dr. Seuss braille books in honor of Dr. Seuss' birthday and will then do a presentation with her guide dog, Ume. She will be happy to answer questions on how Ume keeps her safe. There will be a free raffle for all children in attendance.
