Scale Certification
If you sell at a local farmer's market and need your scales inspected, you can call to sign up for a time slot. Appointments will be made from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m. on Tuesday, March 3 at the Davidson County Extension Office.

Piedmont Regional Beef Conference
Join us for the 8th Annual Piedmont Regional Beef Conference on Thursday, March 5, 2020, at the Chatham County Agriculture & Conference Center located at 1192 US 64W Business, Pittsboro, NC.

This year’s conference will feature three phenomenal speakers: Dr. Dale Woerner from Texas Tech University, Dr. Darrh Bullock from the University of Kentucky, and Lee Menius from NC Choices. He will be focusing on the value of high-quality beef with a beef cutting demonstration (low vs. high quality).

In addition, Dr. Darrh Bullock will be presenting on how to select bulls for the commercial herd to improve genetics and target high-quality beef. Lee Menius will talk about how to add value to your operation through meat sales.

At the end of the conference, there will be an optional Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) certification training. The cost for BQA certification is separate from the conference registration and is collected on-site (please bring a check with you). If you are a current NC Cattlemen’s member certification is $15, if not the cost is $40.

There will also be a trade show featuring 20+ industry partners that offer feed, equipment, seed, fertilizer, cattle services, animal health, and more.

Early registration is $15 or registration at the door is $20.

Cleaning, Sanitation, & Food Safety Update
If you are operating a packing house or work with fruits and vegetables, Dr. Chris Gunter of NC State is offering an interactive workshop to provide fruit and vegetable growers information and tools necessary to develop an effective cleaning and sanitizing program.

It will be held on March 18 at the NCDA&CS Piedmont Research Station (8530 Sherrills Ford Rd., Salisbury). After a morning of classroom discussion, the afternoon will include hands-on demonstrations of cleaning procedures and verification methods applicable to many packing houses.

Small Farms Week
Sponsored by Cooperative Extension at N.C. A&T, Small Farms Week 2020, the 34 th  annual Small Farms Week celebration, begins Friday, March 20, in Cherokee County – the home of the 2019 Small Farmers of the Year, Harold and Nancy Long. Events in Cherokee County will take place at the homeland of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians and will include a panel discussion among local farmers and a tour of the Long Family Farms and Gallery. Small Farms Week continues with events on the campus of N.C. A&T the following week, including an Educational Forum and activities for school-age children on Tuesday, March 24, and the annual Small Farmers Appreciation Luncheon on Wednesday, March 25, where the winner of the 2020 Small Farmer of the Year award will be announced. Keynote speaker for the luncheon will be Jimmy Gentry, chair of the North Carolina State Grange, chair emeritus of the CAES Advisory Board, and an alumnus of N.C. A&T College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences. Campus activities conclude on Thursday, March 26, with a student cooking competition.

Celebrate NC State Day of Giving on March 25 by supporting local Extension programs. Save the date! There will be two links - one for general extension and one for 4-H.

Extension Master Gardener Course Informational Session
Avid or amateur gardeners are invited to attend an informational session regarding the Extension Master Gardener program. It will be held Friday, March 27 from 1-3 p.m. at Tom's Creek Farm & Nursery (Old NC Hwy 49, Denton).

Equine Workshop
Join us on Monday, March 30 from 6-8 p.m. for an Equine Workshop at Legacy Saddlebreds, LLC (4151 Thomasville Rd., Winston-Salem). Topics include grazing management, live forage sampling, metabolic issues, and external parasite control.

There is no registration fee, but you must pre-register by March 24.

Respirator Fit Testing
Davidson County Extension, along with NC Agromedicine Institute will hold a respirator fit testing event on April 3 from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m.

Prices for Fit Testing:
$25 medical clearance
$25 respirator fit test
$45 if complete both medical clearance & respirator fit test

Respirators and cartridges will be available for purchase. If you have a respirator, please bring to fit testing. Payment can be made via check or cash.

Local Meat Series
Davidson County Cooperative Extension, along with NC Choices and Rustic Roots on Main, will host a local meat series for consumers about how to handle and prepare local meat. You will be able to meet the local farmers and learn about their operations. In addition, there will be instruction on food safety, butchery demonstrations, cooking demonstrations, and more! Lunch will be provided. Space is limited! 

Registration and payment is due one week before each session. The cost is $40 per session.
Sessions will be from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. on:
- April 4 - Rabbit
- May 2 - Lamb
