Every day University of Cincinnati researchers and scholars are confronting crises in our society. From climate to social justice issues, ethical quandaries related to cryptocurrency and medicine—we've got quite a showcase of events planned during Research + Innovation Week 2022. Trust us when we say there's something for everyone. Among the virtual events is the State of Research Town Hall with President Neville Pinto, Provost Valerio Ferme and Vice President for Research Patrick Limbach. The discussion and Q/A are open to anyone wanting to know more about where UC stands in its research goals and where we're headed with our 10-year strategic plan, Research2030. 'Coded Bias' screening and discussion with filmmaker Modern society sits at the intersection of two crucial questions: What does it mean when artificial intelligence increasingly governs our civil liberties? And what are the consequences for the people that AI is biased against?  The film “Coded Bias” explores the fallout of Massachusetts Institute of Technology Media Lab researcher Joy Buolamwini’s discovery that facial recognition does not see dark-skinned faces accurately, and her journey to push for the first-ever legislation in the U.S. to govern against bias in the algorithms that impact us all. The Office of Research has secured an agreement for anyone to stream the film beginning March 17. To obtain a link, just RSVP below. The OoR then extends a further invitation to join a live virtual panel discussion on the film at 3 p.m. March 24, with the Filmmaker and Director Shalini Kantayya.

Funding opportunity for our mid-career and beyond faculty Are you a faculty member who is midway or further into your career and would like to secure funding to explore with a new idea or direction in your research, scholarly or creative activities? You’re in luck. On March 10, the Office of Research will release requirements for this year’s University Research Council’s Faculty Research Pivot Grants—$15,000 grants that faculty can use to support their proposed activities, which will be expected to be completed within 18 months. The award can include course relief, as necessary.  This program is for individual faculty and may be discipline-focused or interdisciplinary in nature. All areas of research, scholarship and creative activities across UC are eligible and all applicants must provide a letter of support from their unit head.  Those interested should visit the Office of Research’s Internal Funding page beginning March 10. The Cincinnati Ethics Center is accepting nominations for the University of Cincinnati’s 2022 Ethics in Action Award, which will be given to one UC faculty member, one staff member, one student and one member of the Greater Cincinnati community. Each award comes with $1,000 and nominations are due no later than March 14. Self-nominations are permitted but must be accompanied by a letter of support from another member of the UC community. Battelle presenting climate conference in Columbus Interested in joining the community working to address changes in our climate? The organizers of a conference on Innovations in Climate Resilience, presented by Battelle in collaboration with U.S. Department of Energy’s National Laboratories, invite you to a curated technical program with invited keynote presentations, platform and lightning talks and a poster reception. “We’re expecting an audience of government leaders, entrepreneurs and innovators to explore breakthroughs in technology, science, policy and infrastructure,” the website reads, “that will help mitigate the threats to our environment, health, communities, national security and economic well-being from a changing climate.” There is a fee to attend the conference, which runs March 29-30 in Columbus, Ohio.
