Build Academy’s first house

In a quiet neighborhood in Deerfield, WI, there are plenty of gorgeous, new family homes. One home located at 239 W. Nelson Street looks just like the rest, but there is something special about it...

🦷 Accessible dental care

Our first mobile dental unit in partnership with Familia Dental was a huge success! This amazing initiative brought dental care to the community and served 20 young people at OFS, identifying several cavities and other dental issues. Over half of those seen required new patient appointments for further dental work. Many had not visited the dentist in several years and said they took the time for it because it was at OFS.

Thank you to the American Family Insurance Dreams Foundation for making this clinic possible! Together, we're making a real impact on community health.

🛠️ Exploring the trades

Build Academy participants visited the Sheet Metal Workers Training Center for a tour, one-on-one time with 2nd year apprentices, lunch, and two hands-on projects! Huge thank you to Scott Hinz and everyone involved for hosting them!

🎓 Celebrating graduations

Congratulations to Maria for graduating from Legacy and earning her high school diploma! Following graduation, Maria is moving on to UW Health where she is joining their Nursing Assistant Training Program.

“I want to say how proud I am of you,” said Nate, her crew supervisor, “and how important the work you’ve done at OFS has been for your own growth and development and for the whole crew. You’re the calm presence in the background but also someone who speaks up and teaches others when you see something that’s not up to our standards.”

Congratulations to Santaisha for graduating from Legacy and earning her high school diploma! Following graduation, Santaisha is enrolling at Madison College in the Medical Laboratory Technician program.

Taylor, her crew supervisor, said in her speech, “You should be so proud of yourself and your dedication and resilience. Even when everything seemed impossible, you didn't give up and for that I'm so proud of you. There have been countless obstacles that Santaisha has overcome during her time here. Because of her constant communication, it made it much easier to attack each situation one by one.”

🌸 Representing OFS in DC

Last week, OFS was well represented in DC! And what perfect timing to see the cherry blossoms!

Cory and Taylor presented on community partners and public interactions at The Corps Network National Conference. Taylor said, “What an honor it was to represent OFS. I was happy to share my experiences and to learn from the different break out sessions.” Three of our five Legacy crews, one of which is led by Taylor, work in city and county parks as members of Corps Network, completing conservation projects to maintain our green spaces.

Brian, our executive director, and Greg, previous executive director, met with Congressman Mark Pocan on the Hill to discuss support and funding for The Corps Network, which would also positively impact the work we do at OFS.

👋 Welcome to OFS!

💙 Honoring Greg’s 13 years

If you want to thank Greg Markle for his service to our young adults as Executive Director, please consider a gift to OFS! Our goal is to raise $13,000 in honor of his 13 years. So far, we have raised $3,218!
