Catharine Varnedoe Presents LAA March Program
A native of Savannah, Catharine Varnedoe celebrates her love of the area with luminous landscapes of the Low Country. She is inspired by the light of our intense sunshine and the contrasting deep shadows of a full canopy. A painting of reflected sunlight on coastal waters, an intimate garden setting or a welcoming pathway arched by live oak branches dripping with Spanish moss magically draw the viewer into her world.
Catharine received her formal art education at the University of Georgia, studying under nationally recognized painter and head of the art school, Lamar Dodd. Upon receiving her BFA she became the art teacher at Savannah Country Day School.
Marrying and moving to San Francisco, she continued her studies at the Academy of Art. Catharine and her family moved to Oakland, CA where she ran the art program at Crocker Highlands School. Returning to school, she studied graphics at Laney College in order to get into freelance illustration. She worked at Data Point, a computer company, designing alphabets. She also illustrated a map of inns of northern California.
Moving back to Savannah, Catharine had a well-received one woman show at Scarborough House. She did freelance illustration and graphic design work for a host of Savannah companies and organizations and illustrated three children’s books.
Catharine has done numerous commissioned landscapes and portraits of children, adults, and pets. Her work has been exhibited in several galleries. Currently she is an exhibiting member of the LAA and The Downstairs Gallery on Gordon Street, where she had a successful one woman show and has participated in many group shows.
On Tuesday, March 17, join us for Meet-and-Greet at 6:30, program at 7:00 p.m. Non-members are welcome for a $3.00 charge.

The Landings Art Association
Announces its
March 2020 Art Exhibit
featuring Artists of the Month
Penny Thompson
and
Marie Tomlinson
On Thursday, March 5, the Landings Art Association invites you to the LAA/Sound View Gallery at the Plantation Club to view “Noah’s Ark”, a special exhibit by Artists of the Month Penny Thompson and Marie Tomlinson, whose animal artwork will be displayed “2 by 2” on the wall and in the showcase. As illustrated by the two lions seen here, Penny’s animal watercolors and paper collages will be paired with Marie’s depiction of the same animals in pastel or alcohol ink.
Penny and Marie (aka Thelma and Louise) have been friends for over 45 years, having met while teaching on Long Island, N.Y. Penny and her husband John moved to the Landings in 2008, followed closely by Marie and her husband Kenny in 2010.
Penny served as LAA President from 2012-2017. She is presently the organization’s workshop chair, and often gives instruction in watercolors. A self-taught artist, Penny’s work captures the innate beauty of her surroundings or subjects while resonating with color and excitement. Throughout the years, Penny has won numerous ribbons at the LAA Spring Shows and at our Merrill venue. Her artwork can be found in private galleries in the U.S. and abroad. Visit Penny’s website at www.pennydaythompsonart.com, or email her at prettypenny52@gmail.com.
Marie is currently the LAA’s Technology Specialist, as well as the LAA/Sound View Gallery at Plantation Chair. Working in paper collage soon after moving to The Landings, Marie became intrigued with alcohol ink because of its vibrant colors and fluid appearance, as well as the control challenge it presented. Marie finds that working in different genres, and with various materials provides continual inspiration and personal growth. Pastels especially provide the rich color that originally attracted her to alcohol ink, and is her medium of choice for the many dog portraits she creates for neighbors and friends. In addition to her artistic pursuits, Marie is currently giving workshops for artists who would like to create their own artist’s website.
Since joining the LAA in the beginning of 2018, Marie has received two first-place ribbons for her 2018 and 2019 Spring Show entries, and she won the December 2019 LAA/Sound View Choice Award at Plantation. Her artwork can be seen on her website at www.marietomlinsonart.com, and you can contact her through her website or email her at inkstresse@gmail.com.

Gail Quinn
March
Originally from the New York City area, Gail and her husband Jim lived in several major U.S. cities before retiring; first to Kiawah Island and then Savannah. Interested in drawing from an early age, Gail managed to find time to study art in Chicago, New York, Philadelphia, and Boston while building a nursing career and raising two sons.
When Gail first moved to the Landings in 2002, she volunteered at the Wesley Community Center introducing children to art, and painting a large mural in their outdoor play area.
She has given private art lessons to students applying to the Savannah Arts Academy, helping them complete their portfolios. She has been judged into the Southwest Washington Watercolor Society, an organization in which she continues to be active. One of her paintings was featured on the cover of the Vancouver, Washington phone directory, and many of her paintings can be found in homes throughout the Landings and across the U.S.
Her main focus has been large acrylic and oil paintings of the low country. Recently she has started to design jewelry as well as encaustic art and oyster shell sculptures. Whatever medium,
Gail considers color and design to be the most important elements in her creations.
Gail will be the featured artist at the Landings Real Estate Company office for the month of March. Her collection being featured is, “All about Marshes.” Please stop in during business hours to see her paintings. After living and loving the Landings for 18 years, Gail and her husband Jim will be moving to Arizona to be closer to their sons and their families in the Pacific Northwest. They will continue
to spend their summers in the Pacific Northwest. Please come to the reception on Thursday, March 12th from 5:30- 7 P.M. at the Landings Real Estate Company Office.
