March 2020

Our first Basic Training course begins March 19. There's still time to talk to our Membership Committee and get registered.
From the top

The coronavirus is in the news right now. It is too early to tell if this will grow into an emergency in our area. One thing for sure, it is a good reminder to all residents to take care of yourself. Wash your hands regularly, and keep yourself healthy.

Can you help us fill our March Basic Training course? As of today, we still have a few openings. Are you interested in learning more? Can you find a neighbor or two to join you to grow your neighborhood team?

The team has scheduled some great activities this year from Active Shooter Response to the Grid Search Skills Boost. I hope to see you at one of our upcoming public events.

New Member-Exclusive Skills Boost: Grid Search
What a tremendously educational session! Attendees at the Feb. 22 Grid Search Skills Boost met with five members of the Manatee County Search and Rescue who shared their vast knowledge with us.

The formal presentation was followed by an extensive Q&A session before we donned our vests, helmets and name badges and headed out to the field next to Town Hall to practice what we learned. With all the rubbernecking during our field exercise, we had traffic stopped on LWR Blvd as passersby watched us put our Grid Search knowledge into action!

Manatee County Search and Rescue noted several ways LWR CERT members can help:
  • supplemental manpower during grid searches
  • additional communications capabilities
  • serving as subject matter experts and sharing local knowledge of LWR

Thank you to Manatee County Search and Rescue for a wonderful Skills Boost session and to all the attendees, who added another arrow to their SAR quivers.

Thanks to Rich Raymond and Karen Emanuelson for digitally capturing the morning's activities, to Nigel Pilling for technology support and Diane Anderson for assisting everywhere needed.
Feb 27: Public Session
Hurricane Prep: Snowbird and Travelers Edition
The first Hurricane Preparedness session of 2020 was a huge hit and a combined effort of more than a dozen LWR CERT members including presenters Pat Knowles, Rich Raymond and John Rocco and event coordinators Nigel Pilling, Diane Anderson and Karen Emanuelson. Manning the hurricane supplies table were Lenoire Bredt, Mel Davis, Connie Farmer, Tom Hickey, Jan Kuhn, Valerie Stafford-Mallis, Tim Sherer, and Kim Wright. We educated more than 80 residents and heard many, many positive comments from attendees.
