It's an exciting time to live in San Marcos and I'm thrilled to announce the launch of our
Honor Roll of REALTORS program this month! We all know that strong schools and a thriving community lead to higher real estate values. As a REALTOR myself, I also understand the important role we play in influencing the community's view of our public schools. We are often the first person to give information about our local schools to a new family moving into the community. I was fortunate to also be a school counselor in San Marcos for many years, so I had a solid understanding of the district and had first-hand knowledge about it's schools. I was able to confidently answer questions and give information to families new to the community and the district.
San Marcos Unified Sc
hool District has rightfully gained a respected reputation and is somewhere families want to send their children to receive a quality education. With outstanding higher education institutions in our backyard, such as Palomar College, Pima Medical Institute and Cal State University, San Marcos, we are referred to as the "education hub" of north county. As well, the City of San Marcos is growing tremendously and is a place people are flocking to live. We've seen exciting expansions in North City and most recently with the ground breaking of the Creek District. With all that said, it's a great time to be a REALTOR in the area!
The San Marcos Promise connects education, business & industry, and community leaders to impact student futures. We are working with the San Marcos Unified School District and the City of San Marcos to begin our Honor Roll of REALTORS program, providing REALTORS opportunities to learn more about our city and connect with our schools. Our Honor Roll REALTORS will have access to unique marketing opportunities to show their support for our students in the community.
On March 12, we will kickoff our program at the Lost Abbey in San Elijo Hills. Participants will hear from City of San Marcos Mayor Rebecca Jones, San Marcos Unified School District Superintendent Carmen Garcia, and one of the developers of North City, Mike McDonald. We invite all local REALTORS to join our Honor Roll of REALTORS program and help
open doors to promising futures
.

"Ever since I was in elementary, I knew I wanted to become a teacher. Having caring, loving teachers and seeing the impact that they had on me, made me realize that I wanted to make a difference in students' lives one day as well.
Education is very important to me, and it is something that I value very much. I want to share my love for learning with students, and let them know that it isn't something to be intimidated by. English is my second language, and I remember how difficult it was for me to learn a new language at school, while speaking a different one at home. There were many obstacles that I had to overcome, one being the language barrier. I have found my passion in bilingual education, and the idea of incorporating a new language while retaining the students’ first language. I want to help families and students succeed and let them know that they are not alone. I hope to reach out to students and families and guide them in what could be an unfamiliar setting to them. It would break my heart seeing my parents’ frustration with wanting to help me but not knowing how, because of the language barrier. Experiences like these have influenced my decision in wanting to become a teacher.
After four and a half years, I am proud to say that I am a first generation college GRADUATE! I have graduated from Cal State San Marcos and am one step closer to becoming a teacher and making a difference.
I cannot thank everyone enough who has helped me along the way, especially The San Marcos Promise. I remember the first time I heard about The Promise. I was a 5th grader at San Marcos Elementary. The Promise gave our community hope. Hope for better futures, for not only students, but for everyone around them. The Promise allowed me to pursue higher education and my passion for teaching. For me, The Promise was a support system that cheered me on and believed in me. I have the opportunity to become a bilingual elementary teacher because of The Promise.
I plan to complete a credential program within the next year but know I'll be a lifelong learner. Education is something no one can ever take away from you and has the power to change lives."
- Maite Soriano, PACE Scholar, Former TSMP Ambassador

Our Learning Enrichment to Achieve Promise (LEAP) program is one of the best afterschool and summer enrichment programs in the county for K-8 students.
LEAP helps students discover new interests and passions and helps them gain critical 21st century skills such as adaptive problem solving, collaborative communication, and digital fluency.
Not only is it taught by our extraordinary credentialed SMUSD teachers, the teachers are able to design a class in an area they are especially passionate about, with an emphasis on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art & Mathematics). Students are exposed to classes they might not otherwise have had the opportunity to take during their school day.
A huge added benefit of LEAP is that some of the proceeds go back to the school who hosts LEAP.

Education Coordinator Corner
|
|
Thank you to Pima Medical Institute for your continued partnership and making our Education Coordinator positions possible! Our Education Coordinators, Amanda and Roy, continue to impact student futures on a daily basis. From one-on-one student appointments to classroom presentations, they are helping students connect to a future guided by purpose and passion. They have administered and interpreted the Super Strong Interest Inventory to all 9th and 10th students at SMHS and MHHS. The Super Strong helps students learn about themselves and identify their interests. Before students can broach the topic of careers, they need to understand themselves, their interests, and the role it plays in the world around them. Super Strong assists with this and provides students with meaningful connections to the world of work.

Amanda chaperoned a group of SMHS female students at a special event at Collins Aerospace in Carlsbad. The day was designed to inspire young ladies to pursue a career in the STEM fields.

TSMP is a proud fiscal sponsor to the
Warrior Village Project
, spearheaded by Mr. Mark Pilcher and coming to fruition at San Marcos High School in Mr. Chris Geldert's Woodshop class. The Warrior Village Project is helping to provide permanent, affordable housing to homeless veterans while training the next generation of homebuilders.
Thank you to our generous community supporters and volunteers, to
Mr. Pilcher, Mr. McSweeney from BIA,and to
Mr. Geldert who works tirelessly everyday sharing this amazing experience with his students.
A special thank you to Mr. Arie DeJong for his generous donation of $10,000 to both San Marcos High and Twin Oaks High School woodshop programs!
This is a perfect example of the importance of connections and demonstrates the impact it can have, not only in the lives of students, but the community at large.
