Fried Green Millennial's
We are having brunch with Megan (our daughter in law) who recently left her job in Public Relations to make a sharp left had turn into Wellness and Health. She is thrilled. She was burned out. Really, really Burned Out. So then I read an article about millenials burning out at a ridiculous rate. Adam and I were talking about the Hollywood version of that but in a way it's the same everywhere.
1. The Recession made jobs in your chosen field hard to come by. So they would take whatever you could get and work as hard as necessary to keep it.
2. Millennial's are the first "Digital Natives". They grew up with screens. Do you remember going into an Apple store 15 years ago and watching 3 year old zooming around the computers and doing things with more speed and grace than you could? So being on your phone/laptop/tablet is LIFE for millennial's. Every day life. So when I am expected to be on a conference call to China at midnight it's not a big deal I was on my phone or tablet anyway. According to Adam for many it shows up like what I was doing anyway not "work," though it of course is.
3. Companies want you to be connected and working all the time. You burning out is your problem.
4. EVERTHING IS A ------- CRISIS! Nothing can wait till next week, or tomorrow or 5 minutes from now. Crisis, crisis, crisis. Adrenaline and cortisol rushing through my blood stream all the time! Combined with the above items, you have the burn out perfect storm.
When you are working all the time, though it doesn't look radically different from you playing (face pointed to a screen) there is a sneaky thing you are losing. Community.
The book The Truth About Burnout by Maslach and Leiter points to this subtle point. Community takes time to build. When you have everyone working every second of the day where is the time to create relationship let alone community? Community sustains us in the tough times. If I don't have a community at work, working all the time prevents one outside of work, so bingo no community anywhere. Floating free in space with no support.
Impromptu mentors are also one of the casualties of no community. People that can give you a reality check about what's BS and what's not. Not formal mentoring programs with a company driven agenda.
The other accelerator of burn out, from our work is no clearly defined Purpose. I have been privileged to have several Millennial's in by last few workshops. As young as 21 (Nexter maybe?) Much as I love them, much as they are in some ways a 2.0 version of us they still don't have any clearer sense of their purpose in life than anyone else. With all of the above, conspiring to crush you, having your purpose identified gives you a fighting chance to manage the madness above. Without it careers that last 3-5 years, maybe. Just to be clear not jobs, careers. Not same job in a different company; new career.
Millennial's have been characterized as "soft and the ultimate in unbridled privilege". Though I am sure it may be true of some, it is NOT my experience. I find them sincere and often times confused. Not surprising given the economic nuclear winter their work lives started in. In my one small way I have tired supporting them and getting their world from their point of view.
So, millennial's are welcome! Workshops, webinars, what ever!
Oh and lastly, I have found them to be very appreciative.

Our Cancellation Policy
To avoid problems in the future here is the policy:
1. All registration fees are non-refundable.
2. If a participant cancels from a workshop more than 30 days prior to first day of a course, they will be given a credit, less a $1,000 transfer fee to be used toward another workshop. They have 2 months to use the credit from the date of the cancellation after that there is no credit or refund.
3. You can only transfer once then the credit is gone.
4. There is no credit if you cancel less than 14 days prior to the first day of the course.
5. If you register online credit cards will be charged immediately.
6. You can only register for an individual course with a credit card. we accept MasterCard, Visa and American Express.
7. We do not "reserve" spaces in a course. If you have not paid with a credit card you are not in the course. |
