The board is making a push at the beginning of the year to expand ABC of Iowa’s membership. We know there are merit shop contractors across the state who could benefit from our association and we are, of course, stronger with more members.

If you can think of someone you’ve worked with on a project or a contractor that is in your area who might be interested in joining ABC of Iowa, it’s not too late to refer those names to Jared, or me by replying to this email.

While we’re certainly known for our incredible apprenticeship program, if you know someone who may not have any apprentices to train this year, let them know ABC of Iowa has much more to offer than just our education opportunities.

Whether it’s world-class safety programming, company discounts, workforce development opportunities, networking or protecting the merit shop, all of these benefits (and more) are already included with a yearly membership, with no additional costs.

Again, let Jared or me know if you have a lead on a potential member.

With the temperatures on the rise, we know spring brings an even busier time for ABC of Iowa members. Please be safe – and if you need some extra help developing a plan to keep your employees safe or some additional tools to enhance what you’re already doing, please reach out to Rich, our safety director, and let him get to work for you.

Celebrating Ray Conway
During the February Board Meeting, the Trust recognized Ray Conway from Proctor Mechanical Corp. in West Des Moines for his years of service to ABC of Iowa and our Trust. Ray will be retiring this year and completed his term on the Board of Trustees. Ray previously served as our 2013 Chairman of the Board of Directors and was a driving force for setting us on the course we are today.

As an organization, we’re thankful for Ray’s leadership, passion and dedication to the Merit Shop and our chapter. We wish him a happy and relaxing retirement.
Electrical Exam Prep
Registration is now open for our Electrical Exam Prep class, starting on March 23rd. We are planning additional classes in the coming weeks. Please check out website for updates.

Thank you, Members!
While 2020 was a year none of us were fully prepared for, our ABC of Iowa association has remained strong. We are currently at nearly 90% of members retained this year, and have already added 12 new companies to our organization.

As an association with a wide array of member company sizes – from all over the state – we have heard directly from members about the struggles and battles that you have been facing. And we know you have leaned on your ABC ties to get through this together. THANK YOU for your commitment to our organization and to helping us grow in the future.

Excellence in Construction Gala is ON! The competition is now closed and the judging has been completed. We’re set for April 23rd at the Iowa Events Center in Des Moines, starting at 5:30 p.m. Even if you have not submitted a project in this year’s competition, please plan to attend the event. It will be good to network and be an association together, celebrating the achievements of contractors in a difficult year. Formal invites and registration will be coming soon.
Networking Opportunities
We will be hosting After Business Cocktails events across the state again this year. We kick off our first one on April 28th in Waterloo. This is a relaxed opportunity to network with ABC members in your area and discuss upcoming events, make connections for future projects and get to know old and new members. View the calendar here.

U.S. House bill threatens Iowa's right-to-work law
For Iowans though, the PRO Act would go even further by totally eliminating Iowa’s right-to-work law. This law, which has been in effect since the 1950s, provides Iowans the choice to join a union or not join a union. With one disastrous vote, congressional Democrats want to destroy the freedom workers in Iowa have, in order to shift the advantage to union bosses. This would mean that you could be forced to join a union and pay union dues regardless of your desire to do so.
