Learning & Discerning Matthew 25

We welcomed Rev. Dr. Diane Moffett, President and Executive Director of the Presbyterian Mission Agency, to preach on Dismantling Systemic Racism, one of the foci in the Matthew 25 Invitation. The selection of that M25 focus for February 23rd was intentional because it was the fourth anniversary of Ahmaud Arbery’s murder within our presbytery bounds and the catalyst for Savannah Presbytery forming a Racial Justice Ministry Team. Rev. Moffett’s sermon “Seeing Jesus” was truly Spirit led.

In addition, she led a Matthew 25 workshop at our Faith Enrichment Conference. You are invited to watch the recorded workshop by clicking the button below and entering the password: Xh&z5UL. In the recording Rev. Moffett references her Power Point which is also shared below.

Here are some resources to help your faith come alive! These include everything from group study to leadership to books and resources for children and youth. Even if your group has not officially signed on to be a Matthew 25 congregation, the resources in this digital guide allow you to work toward the faithful foci.

Our Racial Justice Ministry Team also provides resources we have used and recommend, pilgrimage reflections and our journey toward justice on our website.

Support One Great Hour of Sharing

One Great Hour of Sharing is the single, largest way that Presbyterians come together every year to work for a better world. Typically received on Easter Sunday, which this year falls on March 31, the annual Offering supports Presbyterian Disaster Assistance, the Presbyterian Hunger Program and Self-Development of People (SDOP). All three programs work to serve individuals and communities in need to provide people with safety, sustenance, and hope.

For the first time in Savannah Presbytery’s history, we have a certified SDOP Committee, chaired by Rev. Jamil el-Shair, which will receive one third of our total OGHS collection to fund projects improving our local communities! We will need YOU to find groups in your communities with projects addressing local needs that can apply for SDOP grants!

Find resources to promote OGHS here. Posters, minutes for mission, bulletin inserts and offering envelopes are available in English, Spanish and Korean.

School of the Laity Update

Join us in celebrating a fabulous March Session!

Thanks to all who participated from Georgia and Florida! Plus a special thank you to Rev. Rick Douylliez and Rev. Cathy Belles for leading classes!

Consider who you might encourage in your congregation to take part in the new School of the Laity cohort that begins this June 21st – 23rd. Help us help you equip the members of your congregation! The program spends the first year steeped in Scripture. In June, the small group will take Intro to the Bible with Dr. Bob Bryant of Presbyterian College – one of the kindest, most Christ-like humans I know. In the fall, the cohort will survey the Old Testament with Dr. Brennan Breed from Columbia Seminary, and in the spring, they will survey the New Testament. Participation can take place in person or online. If your church is able, perhaps offering financial aid to participants might encourage them to participate. Also, feel free to reach out to myself or Rev. Cathy Belles, Chair of the Education & Training Team, for a presbytery scholarship application.

Do not wait until June! Begin now to find and encourage one or two participants!

Ongoing Journey Towards Justice

Poor Peoples’ Campaign Update

A small group from Savannah traveled to Atlanta in support of the Georgia Poor Peoples’ Campaign in which 33 states organized rallies on March 2nd to educate folks that poverty is the fourth largest cause of death for people in the US. We heard testimonies from working folks, trapped in poverty with no access to living wages, affordable and adequate housing, fully funded education, and healthcare. Learn more about the affects of poverty in our state.

Montreat Youth Special Offering

Montreat has many times been described as a "thin place"- a place where you can glimpse the divine. At the annual youth conferences, Montreat provides the opportunity for authenticity, community, connection, and God’s truth to thrive. Youth come to know and believe they are God’s beloved. It has been a long-standing tradition for Savannah Presbytery to send a delegation to the Montreat Youth Conference each summer to experience the greater connected church and this transformative place. Listen to what youth share about Montreat by clicking the Youth Testimonies button!

The expense to house and to transport the youth to Montreat is ever rising. The Council approved an annual Special Offering to be collected to offset those costs so more youth can afford to attend. Individuals and congregations can make a difference in the faith journey of our young people.
