Making (a) Merry (-Go-Round) Behind the Scenes at Riverside Theatre | |

Is anybody else kicking himself for not getting to Riverside Theatre before Covid shut down Carousel mid-production at the start of the season? Do some of your fondest memories from childhood include a merry-go-round, with or without the brass ring? So disappointing if all the horses that went up and down were taken!

Jordan Lippert, technical director at Riverside, was kind enough to answer some questions for Arts Blast about how a carousel comes to be, sharing enough information to tell me I will not be making my own. There's a permanent staff of seven in the scene shop, Lippert said, with an occasional temp brought in to help with painting.
| So, if you're a technical director instructed to build a carousel, don't expect it to come with instructions. "There may be a small description but not any instructions," Lippert said. "The scenic designer will research and design them generally or work with us on the design." For Carousel, Riverside Theatre's Artistic Director/CEO Allen Cornell added that title to his name. | |
In the old world of carousels, the horses would have been carved from wood, but for the stage, they came as molded-plastic, ready for the painting team. Lippert explained: "There were molds made from real antique horses and then ours were plastic castings that we painted. ... We had two people painting the five horses for about three weeks."

I had assumed that somewhere there's a huge warehouse complex where theaters store big sets but that's not the case, Lippert said. "There is not any sort of professional repository for plans of shows or props. All show designs are the property of the designers, essentially." And that's why there's still a carousel, 12'6" in diameter and height, with full-size carousel horses, backstage at Riverside Theatre.

At this writing, plans were being made to dismantle the carousel. Its future is not certain, Lippert said, but the horses, the 530 lights, and the electrical motor and its hardware will be saved.
I've heard that an auction of the horses is under consideration but the decision had not yet been made when the information for Arts Blast came in. Stay tuned.
Coming to Riverside Theatre May 10 is Almost Heaven - The Music of John Denver. Live in the Loop and the Comedy Zone Experience begin the new season April 8 and 9.

Humanity Through the Artist Eye - A Three Woman Perspective

Join moderator Maria Miele as she talks with artists Cheryl Cote and Danuta Rothschild about their artworks featured in the exhibit. Registration required.
Cheryl Cote′ (koh-tay), a visually impaired artist, vividly conveys life experiences in a desire to inspire people to overcome their own personal challenges. Cheryl Cote′s work has evolved from a very fine detail artist to a broader spectrum of color and light. Many of her works are very colorful and bold on a large scale. She often starts with a black and white to grayish background and uses spot color to give meaning or punch to certain aspects of the story that she paints. Due to Cheryl’s limited sight it’s a challenge to paint, she has developed a unique style to relay her image on the canvas, bold, great light and shadow and color. Through her eyes we see the soul in each figure she paints.
An internationally respected and award-winning artist, Danuta Rothschild, can capture the scope of human experience from the ominous to the magically affirming. Her artwork has been shown in France, Poland Bosnia and the United States. In her earlier she shows the humanity and poverty in the world and in America. Bold color and texture show the story and struggles of her characters as they move through life. When she moved to California, her work shifts visually with a lighter look at space and time a reflection perhaps on her new environment. Placing figures into a greater space and nature she gives a sense of dreamlike or vast perspective of the human experience. Nature, vast and endless and we are but a small part of the story she tells.

And That Brings Us to the Dinosaurs ... | |

Dinosaurs Around the World has been enchanting kids and grownups at McKee Botanical Garden in Vero Beach since November, but closing day is approaching, although (shhhh!) that might be postponed. If your exposure to dinosaurs ended at a movie theater with the Jurassic Park franchise, this exhibit will expand your horizons.
| Following my conversation with Jordan Lippert at Riverside Theatre about what you do with a 12'6" carousel, I had to ask Connie Cotherman at McKee how you send ten animatronic dinosaurs packing. Her reply wasn't what I expected: "They are made out of foam and were shipped in parts and had to be sewn together." I see a seam ripper or two in McKee's future. | |

Dinosaurs Around the World invites you to the supercontinent of Pangea to discover how plate tectonics, land bridges, and volcanic activity allowed dinosaurs to disperse to all corners of the globe, giving each of today’s continents its own unique selection of these giant reptiles. During their 172 million-year reign, dinosaurs adapted into a variety of forms due to the different environmental conditions each continent possessed. The exhibition includes 10 animatronics such as the mighty T. rex of North America, the bi-pedal predator Herrerasaurus, one of the first dinosaurs to appear on Earth, and the bizarre, bony-crested Oviraptor from Mongolia!

Dr. Gregory M. Erickson, a world-renowned dinosaur paleontologist, is the Senior Scientific Advisor for Dinosaurs Around the World. Dr. Erickson received his Ph. D. from the University of California, Berkeley and conducted post-doctoral research at Stanford University and Brown University before joining the faculty at Florida State University in Tallahassee. Dr. Erickson’s research focuses primarily on dinosaur growth, life history and feeding biomechanics. He has also participated in over forty expeditions, including trips to the Gobi Desert of Mongolia, Romania, and the Alaskan Arctic.
| Dinosaurs Around the World: The Great Outdoors is open daily to the public Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm and Sunday from 12:00 pm to 5:00 pm for a limited engagement through May 1, 2022. Rock & Roll Revue, an ensemble of the Melbourne Municipal Band (MMB), will present an up-tempo, golden oldies concert on Friday, April 1, 2022, beginning at 7:30 p.m. at the Cocoa Village Playhouse, 300 Brevard Ave., Cocoa.
Conducted by Art Martin, the Rock & Roll Revue is a 12-piece group that plays popular music from the 1950s and 1960s. It includes an eight-piece combo, singer Len Fallen, and the Swingtimers Vocal Trio, consisting of Connie Maltby, Diana Sageser and Dave Hutson.
