March News & Events

A Message From Our Board President, Crystal Daily

Hello & Happy March!

As we step into this new month, I urge you to join us in paying tribute to our beloved board member Johanna Corbridge, who recently passed away. Her remarkable contributions have left an indelible mark, and it is in her honor that we dedicate the feature below.

The WICT Network: Pacific Northwest Chapter Board Members and volunteers are working on a fresh approach to engage with YOU! Our goal is to create different ways to interact with members throughout the entire Pacific Northwest Chapter which includes people from Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Nevada, Alaska, Montana and Hawaii. We are working to enhance our social media presence, revamp our member newsletters and start planning discussions to create engaging events, both virtual and in-person. More details coming soon.

If you haven’t already renewed your membership with The WICT Network for 2024, please click the link below to avoid a lapse in benefits. The renewal grace period for your annual membership will expire on March 31.

Lastly, I want to take a minute to celebrate March, Women’s History Month and bring special attention to the PAR Initiative. The WICT Network serves as a catalyst for industry change through research, development, advocacy and educational programs. The most important research effort by The WICT Network is the PAR Initiative, which measures and supports the advancement of women in the media, entertainment and technology industries in three areas: Pay Equity, Advancement Opportunities and Resources for Work/Life integration. The PAR Initiative offers a roadmap for identifying and tracking inequality and pinpointing where there is room for improvement. Companies can then apply this information to such areas as employee retention and recruiting, and to such crucial practices as establishing a pay equity policy. The WICT Network’s PAR Initiative affects the entire industry by creating benchmarks for a more diverse and fair work environment.

Thank you for being part of The WICT Network: Pacific Northwest Chapter!

Remembering Johanna Corbridge: A Tribute to a Beloved Board Member

It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of the passing of our beloved board member, Johanna Le Corbridge. Johanna passed away on Monday, February 19, 2024, after a short battle with cancer, surrounded by the love of her family. She had served as our Pacific Northwest Chapter of The WICT Network's Board Secretary, and beyond just this role had dedicated her life to serving others. She was known for her generosity, her warm heart and her ability to bring joy to those around her. Her passion for cooking and baking, along with her dedication to helping others succeed, defined her character and left a lasting impact on everyone who had the privilege of knowing her. Johanna's commitment to service and her infectious spirit touched the lives of many.

In addition to her remarkable contributions to our community, Johanna also shared her insights and creativity through her series in our October and November newsletters, titled "Making the Season More Meaningful." Her words and wisdom will continue to inspire us.

Johanna moved to the Pacific Northwest in 2000, and had a deep and abiding love of the natural beauty of our mountains, forests and most especially the ocean. She often made impromptu trips to the Oregon coast, and had a special fondness for the area surrounding Depoe Bay and its rugged coastline.

Her love for cats was evident, as she had adopted multiple rescues over her life, recently caring for two kittens named Jelly and Beans. Prior to them, she had a bonded sibling pair named Monte and Marlowe.

Johanna was also an avid reader and lifelong learner. As a Training Facilitator for Charter Communications for seventeen years, she brought her signature warm and welcoming spirit to all of her many training classes. In this role, she found her calling and established innumerable relationships that became her family of friends. Nothing brought her heart more joy than helping inspire her co-workers to succeed in their careers. The outpouring of love from her many former trainees during her final months has been a testament to the significant and lasting impact she had on her teammates and our industry community.

The loss of Johanna has devastated our board, and we ask you to join us in ensuring that the light she brought to the world continues to stay bright after her passing. We invite you to join us in donating to The American Cancer Society, channeling our collective grief into making a positive impact in the fight against this relentless disease. Your donation will not only honor Johanna’s legacy but also support critical research, patient care and advocacy efforts that can bring us closer to a world without cancer.

In addition to these donations, in the coming months our Board will share the details of a Chapter scholarship in Johanna’s name that will honor her legacy by creating opportunities for learning and development of deserving individuals for years to come. While our hearts are heavy as we navigate this loss, we know that we can help ensure the light of learning that Johanna brought to the world will live on.

We extend our deepest condolences to Johanna's family, including her parents, siblings, nieces and nephews. Our thoughts are with them during this difficult time.

Pioneers of Progress: Celebrating Trailblazing Women in Media, Entertainment & Technology

By: Renée Hogan

As we step into Women's History Month, it's imperative to highlight the towering achievements of women who've paved the path in the realms of media, entertainment and technology. These industries, traditionally dominated by male counterparts, have seen a transformative shift thanks to the relentless spirit, innovation and leadership of remarkable women.

Historical Trailblazers

Hedy Lamarr: Beyond her captivating performances on the silver screen, Hedy Lamarr was a visionary inventor. Her most notable contribution, a frequency-hopping spread spectrum technology, laid the groundwork for today's Wi-Fi, GPS and Bluetooth. Lamarr's dual legacy as an actress and an inventor exemplifies the multifaceted talents of women often overlooked in historical narratives.

Katharine Graham: As the first female publisher of a major American newspaper, The Washington Post, Katharine Graham steered the publication through the tumultuous waters of the Watergate scandal, showcasing not just her prowess in journalism but also her resilience in a male-dominated field. Her leadership not only reshaped the landscape of American media but also demolished barriers for women in publishing.

Modern Innovators

Sheryl Sandberg: In the echelons of technology's c-suite, Sheryl Sandberg has carved a niche as a formidable force. As the Chief Operating Officer of Facebook, now Meta, she has been instrumental in scaling the social media giant while advocating for women's roles in the workplace. Her book, "Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead," has sparked global conversations about gender equality in professional settings.

Kimberly Bryant: Addressing the stark underrepresentation of African American women in technology, Kimberly Bryant founded Black Girls CODE. This groundbreaking organization aims to bridge the racial and gender gap in tech by introducing young African American girls to coding and technology, thereby cultivating a new generation of coders, innovators and leaders.

In the contemporary landscape, numerous women are forging new paths and disrupting traditional narratives. From game developers breaking the gender mold in eSports to female filmmakers using virtual reality for storytelling, the spectrum of innovation is vast and varied. These emerging voices not only enrich the industries with fresh perspectives but also inspire a younger generation to dream without boundaries.

The stories of these pioneering women serve as a testament to the indomitable spirit of female innovators, leaders and creators. They remind us of the strides made towards gender equality and the journey that lies ahead. As members of The WICT Network: Pacific Northwest Chapter, let us draw inspiration from these trailblazers and contribute to the ongoing narrative of women's success in media, entertainment and technology.

In celebrating these achievements, we invite you to share stories of women who inspire you. Whether they are emerging talents making waves or seasoned professionals leading by example, let's shine a light on their contributions together. By doing so, we continue to foster a community that uplifts and highlights the pivotal role of women in shaping the future of these dynamic industries.
