Waveny Honors Village Resident Dorothy Kesten
Waveny was proud to host a ceremony on our Farm Road campus honoring resident Dorothy Kesten who was awarded and recognized with a 65-year pin for her membership and service to the Army Aviation Association of America (AAAA). The AAAA provides news, networking, support and scholarship opportunities to 18,000 Army Aviation soldiers and their families in 78 chapters worldwide.

Mrs. Kesten’s graduated from Cornell University and worked on the Manhattan Project before meeting her husband Art. Mr. Kesten was a US Army aviator in Japan during World War II. The couple was married by proxy in the US and again by a Shinto priest in Japan in order to gain authorization for Mrs. Kesten to join her new husband overseas.

Upon his return to the U.S., Mr. Kesten began publishing an engagement newsletter for Army personnel, and later gained an advertisers for commercial publication in 1953. Army Aviator Magazine was born, followed by the formation of Army Aviation Association of America in 1957. For the next 65 years Mr. Kesten provided the magazine’s creative content and Mrs. Kesten managed the businesses.

The ceremony included a pinning by AAAA President Major General Tim Crosby, Retired. Additional guests included Mr. Bill Harris, Executive Director of AAAA, Mrs. Kesten’s children Dale Kesten and Lynn Coakley as well as Waveny executives Russ Barksdale, Terry Henry, Lynn Iverson, Christene Freedman, staff and residents.

In Memory of Janecke Madsen

With great sadness we would like to honor the memory of Janecke Madsen who passed away recently at age 94. Janecke was a beloved and valued volunteer at Waveny Care Center and throughout the community of New Canaan for over 40 years, recording over 5,500 hours of service with Waveny.  With kindness, compassion and a great smile, Janecke would arrive early on a Saturday and Sunday morning to serve breakfast to residents in our Special Care Unit. We send our deepest sympathies and condolences to her family and friends.
