Kate McBrien, Maine State Archivist, and College of the Atlantic design professor Dru Colbert will give a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the Maine State Museum exhibit “Malaga Island, Fragmented Lives,” honoring its interracial population who were evicted from the island in 1912 by orders from Maine Gov. Frederick W. Plaisted.

ASC Members' Outing

Winter Birds of Acadia

The March 16th outing with Seth Benz is now FULL, but there is a possibility of adding a second outing on March 23rd.

Please contact us if you are interested.

We'll need 10 or 12 people to make a group.

If we have enough people, Seth Benz, Bird Ecology Director at Schoodic Institute, will lead a two-hour Winter Birds of Acadia outing on MDI for ASC members. We will explore and learn about the winter birds on Mount Desert Island, and watch for common eiders, black-capped chickadees, buffleheads, eagles, downy woodpeckers, harlequin ducks, and more.

The cost would be $12 per person.

Update: Clunan Lecture Series

We can now offer more specifics about the inaugural lecture, which will

be offered by Anne Clunan, PhD, daughter of Dorothy and Jim Clunan. It will take place at the Neighborhood House in Northeast Harbor on

September 20, 2023, followed by a reception.

Anne writes that she will “talk about Russia's war on Ukraine and the shifting global order, as my initial interest in the USSR and later Russia stemmed from both of my parents' careers as diplomats and their commitments to democracy and open societies.”

As we get closer to the event, look for the announcement of additional

discussions and events related to Anne’s subject matter.

Also, watch for our appeal letter requesting support for this and future

lectures. We hope you will choose to be among the inaugural donors!

Opera Preview at the Grand - Falstaff

The next opera preview with Bob Gallon will be Saturday, April 1st. Bob will lead a discussion prior to the live broadcast of "Falstaff" at the Grand in Ellsworth.

This talk is from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., followed by a break for lunch. The live broadcast begins at 12:30 p.m. For more information click here.

The preview talks are free and no reservations are required. You do not have to attend the live broadcast to participate in the pre-event discussion, but tickets for the live broadcast can be purchased online or at the door.

ASC Weather Cancellation Policy

“Acadia Senior College cancels events and classes when the MDI schools close for snow or weather events. When a delay occurs, ASC also cancels events or classes that start within the delay time period.”

This means that if there is a two-hour school delay, ASC morning classes will be cancelled, but afternoon classes will still be held unless otherwise instructed. Please visit mdirss.net for school announcements.

Don't forget to update your ASC account so we can stay in touch. You can log in to your account to update your information. Or, call or email us with your changes. If you are away part of the year, we can make a note of your winter address, though you can't yet record that yourself in your ASC account.

More Learning Opportunities

Did you know that as members of Acadia Senior College, you are eligible to register for classes offered by other Senior Colleges in Maine without paying an additional membership fee? Space permitting, you can register for online courses and pay only the course fee.

There are 16 senior colleges in Maine, offering a variety of classes and presentations, some of which are free and many are offered by Zoom. To learn more, read and subscribe to the MSCN newsletter.
