Fostering Inclusivity, Appreciation Every Day

Celebrating Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month Beyond March

March is annually Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month (DDAM), a time when we reflect on the talents, joys, and challenges of our disabilities community. At Autism Society of Ohio, this month serves as a reminder not only to celebrate our community's gifts but also to advocate for ongoing awareness, acceptance, and support.

In our household, the joys of our Autistic son's journey are abundant. Guided by the dedication of an exceptional teacher, he has blossomed into a proficient pianist, sharing his music with those around him. From the gentle melodies of the piano to the strums of the bass guitar and the tunes of the ukulele and recorder, his passion for music knows no bounds. Additionally, the Special Olympics has been a source of immense joy, showcasing his talents in the water and fostering a sense of achievement.

While the media often spotlight extraordinary talents, we believe that every individual's pursuits, regardless of their scale, are worthy of celebration. As Kurt Vonnegut eloquently stated, "Practicing an art, no matter how well or badly, is a way to make your soul grow." Whether it's singing in the shower, dancing to the radio, or sharing stories and poems, every expression of passion enriches our lives and strengthens our sense of community.

As we conclude DDAM, let us extend our celebration beyond the confines of this month. Let us continue to embrace our talents, passions, and differences every day, finding joy in the moments of connection and fulfillment they bring. Together, let us cultivate a culture of inclusivity and appreciation that transcends boundaries and enriches the lives of all.

FEATURED PROGRAMMING

Bring Programming to Your Area!

Thanks to an ASO Programming Grant, every first-grade class in Tuscawaras County has received Heather Avis's book Everyone Belongs and a guest storyteller to read it. This joyful rhyming book is about how easy it is to make small changes to accommodate those with Autism and other disabilities.

Autism Ohio established these grants of up to $750 to empower local initiatives. These grants offer financial assistance to foster community-driven solutions in counties without direct coverage from one of our affiliate offices. If you want to establish a support group, organize seasonal events, or assist families in your community, please contact us at 614-495-7551 or email info@autismohio.org. Let's make a difference in the lives of individuals with Autism and their families across Ohio and their families across Ohio.

ASCO’s Band Together Showcases Autism Talents Monthly

Autism Society Central Ohio has created a remarkable initiative to regularly celebrate the diverse talents of the local Autism community while fostering a culture of inclusivity and appreciation.

Every second Sunday afternoon, ASCO hosts Band Together Central Ohio event, a collaborative effort with OCALI and Gatsby’s Bar and Grill in Gahanna.

Band Together offers an inclusive platform for individuals on the Autism spectrum to showcase their musical and creative abilities. Attendees are treated to a delightful mix of vocal and instrumental performances, sometimes complemented by original writings and poetry. These expressions of creativity not only bring joy to participants but also uplift the spirits of the audience.

The Columbus Dispatch offers a glimpse into the vibrant atmosphere of this event a feature video they created here.

For information on the program and how you can start one in your area, please contact info@autismcentralohio.org.

SUPPORT OUR MISSION

As the prevalence of Autism rises, the demand for enhanced resources, including local programs and services for individuals and families throughout Ohio communities, also escalates. To meet this need, ASO collaborates with the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles to provide an Ohio Autism Awareness license plate.

The specialty license plate costs $35 annually, with $25 used for advocacy, Autism family support, and programming by us and local affiliates statewide.

NEWS FROM THE STATEHOUSE

The Autism Society of Ohio (ASO) actively engages in governmental advocacy. We are currently closely monitoring Ohio Senate Bill 213. Under consideration by the Senate Judiciary Committee, it aims to provide individuals with developmental disabilities, including those with Autism, a less restrictive alternative to guardianship. It mandates the Ohio Department of Developmental Disabilities to develop a model-supported decision-making plan and provide information about its intended uses.

ASO backs this legislation as it addresses diverse needs within the Autism community. By advocating for supported decision-making, we reaffirm our commitment to empowering individuals to align choices with their preferences and abilities while still receiving essential support. We'll send a letter supporting Senate Bill 213, emphasizing its potential to enhance the autonomy and self-determination of individuals with Autism. Endorsing this bill can foster a more inclusive and supportive environment for individuals with developmental disabilities across Ohio.

In its governmental advocacy, ASO remains dedicated to promoting policies that uphold the rights and dignity of individuals within the Autism community. It strives to enact positive change and foster a more inclusive society through collaboration with legislators and community stakeholders.
