March Updates from Impact100 DC

From Ann Vaughn, President

Dear Impact Members and Friends,

One of the most rewarding aspects of leading Impact100 DC in its fourth year of grantmaking is seeing all the ways that our impact is multiplying.

Our Fellows program is stronger than its ever been, thanks to an excellent applicant pool, our new Board Member Martha Coven who is leading the program, and the eight fellows themselves who are all contributing their unique talents to Focus Area Committees, communications, and other efforts that are core to our mission. I hope you'll take the time to read a little bit about them below and get to know them at a future event.

Meanwhile, the grants we've made to date have not only been high-impact in and of themselves, but have gone to organizations that continue to amplify their missions year after year. I couldn't be more excited to learn about the two $2 million grants awarded by Mackenzie Scott's foundation to Access Youth and Edu-Futuro, both alums of our grant program. As women in philanthropy, we can all be inspired by Mackenzie Scott's approach to giving, which has entailed making large, unrestricted donations to nonprofits across the country with unprecedented efficiency. Her organization, Yield Giving, trusts nonprofits to do what they do best, lifting up their missions and giving them the resources they need to truly transform communities.

Women are making waves in philanthropy, thanks to major donors, foundations, and giving circles like ours. I couldn't be prouder of the contributions Impact100 DC is making to this movement, thanks to all of you.

With gratitude,

Ann

Access Youth Receives $2M from Yield Giving

Congratulations to Access Youth and Edu-Futuro on receiving a $2 million grant from Yield Giving this month!

Access Youth was Impact100 DC's very first grant recipient in 2021, when we awarded them $105,000 to support their M.A.D.E. (My Attitude Determines Everything) Program. Our membership was inspired by Access Youth's mission to empower vulnerable youth with the tools they need to stay in school, graduate on time and avoid the justice system, through mediation and restorative justice. Clearly, word about their impact has only spread since.

Edu-Futuro, one of our 2022 finalists, was also a recipient of a $2 million grant from Yield Giving in this round. Their mission is to empower underserved Latino and immigrant families in Northern Virginia through mentorship, education, leadership development, parent engagement, and workforce development. Edu-Futuro works to break the cycle of poverty by focusing on education as a critical catalyst for positive change in immigrant households.

Yield Giving was established by Mackenzie Scott to share a financial fortune with nonprofits doing good work. We're thrilled to see local DC nonprofits benefit from these transformational grants.

Our Supra Social - Now an Annual Tradition!

For the second year in a row, Impact100 DC members gathered at Supra, a Georgian restaurant in DC, to connect and get to know each other. Thank you to Supra owners Laura and Jonathan Nelms for donating the space and a portion of proceeds to Impact100 DC! And thanks to everyone who came out to spend time as a group, despite the rainy spring weather!

Meet Our 2024 Fellows

Our Fellows Program is stronger than ever this year, with eight talented women who are bringing diverse perspectives and fresh energy to our membership. "Meet" them below, and be sure to say hi at our Annual Celebration in June!

Catherine Colgan

I work in the public health sector and have been living in DC for 2 years. I am excited to join Impact100 as a way to grow closer to the DMV community and give back to the city.

Mayu Molina Lehmann

This is my second year as a fellow at Impact100. I love the mission of this organization and the fact that it is made out entirely of women. I joined the Arts Committee because I love the arts. In fact, I recently became a professional playwright, with my play "Monarch: A Mexican-American Musical" being performed in Los Angeles and Washington, D.C. I look forward to continuing the work of this amazing organization!

Latriece Prince-Wheeler

I am a healthcare executive by profession who enjoys proactive civic engagement, beach vacations and most importantly playing golf. I am a native of Cleveland, Ohio and saw first hand how philanthropic engagement allowed me to attend the university of my choice (Michigan State University). Experiencing the tangible benefits of philanthropic engagement inspired me to join Impact100 DC. If you play golf or are interested in golf - reach out to me, I am always looking for partners to play with.

Talia Curhan

I am a young professional working in public policy for reproductive rights, and I am passionate about equitable health outcomes, food access, and mental health advocacy. I was immediately attracted to Impact100 DC because of the dynamic and brilliant women involved in making truly transformative, sustainable change in the DMV. The Fellowship has been an incredible opportunity to share my voice while learning alongside the membership and from our grantee organizations.

Sarah Keefe

I moved to DC just over a year ago with my dog and cat. I am excited to be an Impact100 Fellow this year! I am looking forward to getting to know and working with other women in the DC area while learning about non-profits that bring a positive impact to the community.

Riley Reed

I'm a passionate advocate for social change, particularly in LGBTQ+ rights and gun violence prevention. I work in an international aid nonprofit and additionally volunteer my time on a national executive board for gun violence prevention and with the United Nations Association-USA. I'm excited to bring my experiences to Impact100. I'm eager to learn and collaborate with like-minded individuals, driven by a shared commitment to creating a positive change in the DC community.

Sophie Van Gilder

I work on City Innovation at The Aspen Institute and am dedicated to creating a more equitable and just world. I’m so excited to be part of this inspiring group of women and contribute to its mission, I can’t wait to learn from each of you!

Emily Ruskin

I am a Senior Policy Advisor in the CHIPS for America Program Office at the US Department of Commerce. Prior to that, I was the Sr. Policy Advisor to the DC Mayor’s Office of Racial Equity, which I helped to found in 2021. I am excited to join Impact100 to gain more practical experience in the mechanics of grantmaking, particularly how to support smaller community-based organizations which do not have the funds to qualify for larger awards through traditional channels.
