One sure sign of Spring with its new beginnings is the return of birds who may have migrated and are now returning to their familiar surroundings where they begin to start their families. Here in Minnesota, we begin to see and listen to robins, bluebirds, cardinals and chickadees as they get their points across through early morning songs. The University of Minnesota’s Extension Division reports that the red-winged blackbirds and first robins appear and are later followed by the sand-hill crane. Eventually you will see and hear a woodpecker attempting to give himself a headache. If you are a birdwatcher, this is an exciting time for you! Our joyful feathered companions come back to entertain us. Ah, the sounds and antics of a variety of birds singing their own very special songs and beginning their new lives in their old familiar spring habitats. It’s a new beginning!
One reason to celebrate Spring is it’s replete with new beginnings. It may be the beginning of new emerging buds on what appeared to be dormant trees. But wait! Now they seem to be waking up! Another beginning is the arrival of our butterflies! Such bright and beautiful colors. Did you know our state butterfly, the Monarch, eventually finds its way to Mexico in the winter months? It is the Mourning Cloak butterfly that lets us know Spring is here in Minnesota according to the University of Minnesota’s Department of Entomology.
Many look upon Spring as a chance for a fresh new start; very similar to the start of the New Year with its hopes and dreams of things to come. As at the start of a New Year, Spring may afford us the opportunity to make plans and set goals too. Now might be a good time to rethink some of those plans from the New Year. Perhaps they never got started or have been silently placed on the back burner. How about dusting off those goals and plans and resetting the rudder? How about taking another look at those promises to yourself and determining if they need to be re-worked? Maybe they weren’t the best plans for you. Now could be the time to switch out those plans for ones that may be more reasonable and more attainable. After all, it’s the start of a new season, a new lease on life and a time for new beginnings!
Let’s also recognize other important occasions such as Easter, International Women’s Day, and Social Work Month! Let’s take the time to stop and smile and recognize the chance to celebrate how these events give us cause to look at new beginnings. This new season is such a happy time of year. It boasts the first warmth of the year. As we’ve seen, Spring assures new life and new beginnings in many ways. May you take the time to look for signs of Spring and may you enjoy the joy these signs may bring. Get out and experience it!
