Sponsored internships with federal, state, nonprofit, or other mission-centered business enterprises provide undergraduate Boise State environmentally focused students with meaningful work experience that will enhance learning and skill development, assist in post-graduation job placement, and ultimately support the development of the environmental and public lands stewards of tomorrow.
This year, four students will be awarded the honor of assigned internships at one of the partnering organizations. Andrus Scholars receive stipends to support the cost of BSU issued credit hours, travel needs, and cost-of-living expenses during their summer internships. These stipends are funded by our generous Andrus Scholars Fund donors. The Andrus Scholars program was launched in 2019 to support our future environment and public lands leaders through meaningful work experience and skill development. 2023 EDUCATION CONFERENCE -- VIRTUAL
|
|
In 2015 the Andrus Center hosted Finding Common Ground. The Education Conference was focused on the science and economic data supporting the need to ensure that every Idaho child should be prepared and ready to learn upon entry to kindergarten and first grade. The 2015 event was a success and put in motion the necessary dialog for better preparing Idaho children for their futures.
We have long awaited the scheduling of the next Education conference. With much anticipation, we are excited to announce that the Education conference has finally been scheduled for May 9, 2023.
The 2023 Education Conference will highlight the school readiness gap and Idaho’s move to full day kindergarten, as a means of accelerating student achievement and beginning to close the gap. This virtual conference will focus on the data from Idaho’s initial year of full day kindergarten and spotlight schools and classrooms where students are making significant gains and beginning to close the gap.

WOMEN AND LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE |
|
Each year the Andrus Center invites women, men, and students to a two-day event comprised of trailblazing speakers and skill-building workshops. Last September, nearly 900 attendees participated online from 32 States, the District of Columbia, and 3 Countries!
The 2022 conference included an amazing lineup: the President and CEO of Bank of the West, Nandita Bakhshi, the Director for the Bureau of Land Management, Tracy Stone–Manning, prominent forensic psychiatrist, author, and environmental activist, Dr. Lise Van Susteren, the first female to fly F-35B jets in the Marine Corps, Captain Anneliese Satz, author and activist against human trafficking, Brenda Myers–Powell, and author and founding CEO of Virgin Unite, Jean Oelwang. Recordings are accessible to registrants now and will be made available to the general public in September 2023 on the Andrus Center YouTube channel (@theandruscenterforpublicpo2692).

Over the two days, attendees will hear from six (6) keynote speakers, four (4) Skill Builder breakout sessions, and virtual attendees will have an array of fun elective activities. 2023 YOUNG WOMEN AND LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE CANCELED

Women and men alike have lauded our original Women and Leadership Conference as a life-changing experience and would frequently comment that they wished there was a conference like it for their daughter or son. In response to this feedback, in 2019 we hosted the inaugural Young Women and Leadership Conference at Boise State University.
For one full school day, 9th-12th-grade students participate in keynote addresses, networking, and skill-building sessions during the annual Young Women and Leadership Conference.

Unfortunately, we had to cancel the annual conference in 2023. We look forward to hosting this teen event again in person in 2024! |

JOHN FREEMUTH STUDENT CONGRESS UPDATE |
|
The Andrus Center for Public Policy at Boise State University, the Public Lands Foundation, and the National Association of Forest Service Retirees convened the inaugural John Freemuth Student Congress October 3-6, 2022 in Boise, Idaho. The conference theme was "Wildland Fire Management."
A small group of undergraduate and graduate students were recruited from colleges and universities from across the country to participate and the cohort included 23 students from 17 states and 19 unique schools. The culmination of the event was a student-authored report.
Betsy Black from Northern Arizona University was chosen by their peers to present the student-authored report of findings and recommendations to the Secretary of the Interior and other agency leaders. This week, Betsy, accompanied by partnering organization representatives, visited the office of the Secretary to present the findings in Washington DC. We are so proud of the accomplishments of the amazing students and their continued work on wildland fire!

JOHN FREEMUTH COLLECTION SHOWCASE |

On February 8th, 2023, the Albertsons Library Special Collections and Archives and the Andrus Center hosted the John Freemuth Collection Showcase event. In an intimate gathering of friends, family, and colleagues we recognized the support of Idaho’s renowned advocate of public lands, Dr. John Freemuth. Gifts were made in John’s honor to fund an internship for a Boise State University graduate student to catalog John’s papers and collections. During the event, displays of John's papers and other archival collections about public lands were showcased and a behind-the-scenes tour of Special Collections and Archives was provided.

Endowed chairs are the hallmark of academic excellence and the ultimate recognition of faculty achievement. During a ceremony on January 30th, 2023, Boise State University installed three endowed chairs, one of which was our very own Dr. Emily Wakild, Endowed Chair for Environment and Public Lands.
Endowed positions provide chair-holders with funding for scholarships, teaching, research and service.

The Andrus Center's Cecil D. Andrus Endowed Chair for Environment and Public Lands was established in 2018 through the completion of a $1.5 million fundraising effort that provides an annual stipend to oversee our mission work within the environment and public lands arenas. The endowed chair is paired with a professorship in the Environmental Studies department of the School of Public Service.
In August, Dr. Emily Wakild accepted the position as the newly appointed Cecil D. Andrus Endowed Chair for Environment and Public Lands. Emily advances the Environment and Public Lands mission of the Center, including the scholarship and development of University’s students interested in these areas of study. As a Boise State University faculty member, she will also contribute to the University’s mission of conducting innovative scholarship and providing student-centered, quality education and will be committed to the success of our students and the University.

STEWARDS OF TOMORROW CAMPAIGN |
|
The Andrus Center for Public Policy serves as Boise State University’s primary academic center on issues of environment and public lands. To continue to grow our reach and impact, we are planning to grow our student programs. The Center is currently raising funds for an endowed Stewards of Tomorrow campaign that further assist students pursuing environmental and public lands careers with experiential development, workforce preparation, and career advocacy so that they may become our stewards and leaders of tomorrow.
The fully implemented program will have ongoing personnel and student program costs. Currently over $350,000 of the $850,000 goal has been raised and we need the help of our many valued supporters to obtain the remaining $500,000.
The Center's success is reflected by the success of students as they go on to become tomorrow's leaders in the environment and public lands community. Help us help them to become the stewards who will protect our natural spaces for our children and grandchildren. Please consider contributing to our Stewards of Tomorrow campaign.
