Volunteer Spotlight

Since the first distribution in Delray Beach over five months ago, Cheryl Perry has been an integral part of the team.

After retiring from a career as a Disabilities Specialist, Cheryl Perry relocated from New York to Delray Beach with her husband. She found herself with more time on her hands and felt compelled to give back.

In October, Cheryl answered a call for volunteers from a local news broadcast and was at the first Delray Beach pantry bag distribution helping to load bags into client cars. Since then, she's held various volunteer roles, but now, you'll typically find her registering new clients for the program.

She's adamant that volunteering gives you a different perspective and allows you to know your community better. Especially as a relatively new resident, this experience has allowed her to serve as a resource while learning more about Delray Beach and her neighbors.

"Volunteering with Boca Helping Hands has allowed me to put into action something that I've wanted to do for many years," she said.

Job Training Update

Benito S. aspired to become an IT professional — and with the help of Boca Helping Hands, he's received the necessary training to do so.

Benito recently completed our Information Technology Job Training Program and earned his CompTIA A+ certification for Information Technology (IT) professionals.

He was first introduced to the profession in high school through preliminary courses and had the opportunity to intern at the School District of Palm Beach County. Since then, he's realized that IT is his calling and passion.

"I love fixing things and helping others by making their lives easier. It is a perfect combination for me," he said.

Since completing his training, Benito has been meeting with a BHH Job Mentor to work on his resume, taken his Network+ Certification exam, and has started working towards his bachelor's in computer engineering. He hopes to land a part-time job to gain experience while in school, working toward his long-term goal of starting his own IT company.

"I believe this program has been the biggest step I've taken toward the direction of my goals. It has been fundamental to becoming everything I aspire to,"  he said.

In Case You Missed It

Here are some other noteworthy updates.

Volunteer Appreciation Dinner

Last week, we had the opportunity to celebrate our amazing volunteers with dinner and an award ceremony at The Addison of Boca Raton. Keep an eye out for more professional photos, coming soon on our social media channels!

Expanding Our Hot Meal Program

We've recently expanded our Hot Meal Program to the Lake Worth area with the help of The Hagan Family Foundation. This particular community needed extra support, so in addition to our weekly pantry bag distribution, now we're also dishing out delicious to-go hot meals for families in need!

Champions on and off the Field

An anonymous donor felt drawn to TopSoccer's mission to offer young athletes with disabilities access to free recreational soccer and generously donated on behalf of BHH, naming us the Charity Sponsor. We're proud to be associated with this organization, where our Director of Development has been involved for over nine years and still serves as a coach.

March is National Nutrition Month

BHH is continuing to promote good nutrition through free health and wellness classes in collaboration with Boca Raton Regional Hospital, part of Baptist Health. We also recently launched a three-month pilot program to provide clients with boxes of locally-sourced fresh produce, thanks to support from Gerstner Philanthropies.
