Radical Plants is vegan specialty foods company started by Melissa Heath, a six-year vegan, and her childhood friend, Lynn Shippey, who is making great strides toward her vegan goal! With both of their kids and Melissa’s husband, Wes, this team has been working to provide healthy, affordable snacks that are so delicious even carnivores love them. Radical Plants launched with Superdip, a plant-based, gluten-free, nut-free, oil-free dip that has no sugar, no preservatives and is made with non-GMO soy. Superdip comes in 3 flavors: Basil Alfredo, Chipotle Lime and Better Than Ranch.

Continued Success Spreading the Plant-Based Message
Last month, VegMichigan hosted three Plant-Based 101 presentations in Shelby Township, Trenton, and Southfield. Attendees enjoyed free vegan food samplings from Unburger Grill and the presentations were very well-received with more than 75% saying they would move toward a plant-based diet.

VegMichigan has a lineup of amazing speakers available to give presentations on the myriad benefits of a plant-based diet and can tailor the focus of the presentation to your needs. If you're interested in bringing a presentation to your workplace or to a community center or library in your area, email olivia@vegmichigan.org .

In addition to our free and low-cost presentations, VegMichigan sets up plant-based learning displays at different libraries around Michigan every month. Check our online calendar for details on upcoming displays and events.
Shifting Away from Traditions That Cause Harm
Sometimes we can be frustrated by the lack of empathy and progress we see among those we're closest to or the stereotype of vegans that persists . But a recent article in Psychology Today reminds us that by empathizing with the reasons people hold on to their traditions and cultural customs so closely, including eating animals, we can become a more compassionate society.
Joaquin Phoenix Uses Oscar Speech to Promote Compassion
In a surprise Oscar acceptance speech last month for his award for Best Actor for playing the lead in Joker , Joaquin Phoenix talked about our disconnect from the natural world and likened the use of cows for their milk to all injustices. He used his platform on national television to implore humans to refrain from our "egocentric worldview" by considering the environment, and all sentient beings, and being a voice for "the voiceless." Watch his speech here .
The very next day, Joaquin Phoenix partnered with Farm Sanctuary to save a cow and her newborn baby from slaughter. Watch the heartwarming video here . For more information on the link between dairy cows and the beef industry, check out this article in The Washington Post .
