We'll also share important boating safety tips to enhance your experience on the water.

We sincerely thank everyone who supported our Grill 'n' Give BBQ fundraiser, which was an outstanding success. We raised over $5,000, which will go toward our summer youth program and provide scholarships for students who may face financial challenges.

Tech Tips from Yamaha Master Technician Shane Bowlin

Prevent Yamaha Prop Shaft Damage: Flushing Your Engine

Here are clear tips and consequences from Shane Bowlin on flushing your Yamaha outboard engine:

Tips:

  • Flush your Yamaha engine with fresh water after every use, especially in saltwater.
  • Use Yamaha’s recommended flushing attachment or earmuffs.
  • When using earmuffs, run the engine at idle for 5 - 10 minutes to circulate freshwater.
  • When using the built-in flushing attachment, DO NOT run your engine.
  • Verify consistent water flow from the indicator (“tell-tale”) hole.
  • Never run the engine without water.
  • Regularly inspect flushing attachments (don’t lose the washer) and hoses for leaks or blockages.

Consequences of Not Flushing:

  • Salt and mineral buildup leading to internal corrosion.
  • Impeller deterioration causing cooling system failure.
  • Restricted water flow and engine overheating.
  • Reduced engine efficiency and horsepower.
  • Increased likelihood of costly repairs or engine replacement.

Regular flushing helps protect your Yamaha outboard, maintain performance, and extend its lifespan.

Safe Boating Tip: Conducting a Pre-Departure Checklist

Before each outing, complete a thorough safety check to ensure your vessel is ready for safe operation:

• Check safety equipment (life jackets, flares, fire extinguisher, first-aid kit).

• Verify fuel and battery levels.

• Inspect navigation and communication devices.

• Ensure bilge pumps, lights, and horn function.

• Examine the hull and engine area for signs of damage or leaks.

• If trailering, don’t forget the drain plug.

Consistent use of a pre-departure checklist ensures a safe and enjoyable day on the water.
