As the world slowly (hopefully!) transitions to a post-Covid era, we are noticing travel restrictions loosen or go away entirely in many places. This will open up the opportunity for many people to finally go on that vacation that’s likely been postponed several times over since 2020. And if you’re anything like me, that long-awaited vacation is desperately needed for many reasons aside from just getting away from your daily grind for a brief period.
For me, traveling used to be a way of life. Granted, the bulk of my travel in my early adult life occurred while I was in the Navy and was not exactly voluntary. That said, I was lucky enough to visit over twenty different countries during my time in the service. This gave me the opportunity to experience many different cultures and ways of life that I otherwise would have never been exposed to. After leaving the military, I tried to continue traveling to new places as much as I could, but more often than not, a schedule conflict would arise, and traveling would take a backseat to whatever was deemed more important at the time (i.e., school, work, et cetera). Over time, it became easier to not schedule any new trips for fear of missing out on something at home. This led to months and years passing by without a meaningful vacation. My wife and I sought to change this in 2019, but the pandemic put a hard stop to those plans. Now with the pandemic ending, we’re gearing up to hit the road and skies again, because we do not want to miss out on all the great things traveling to new places has to offer.
First and foremost, traveling allows us to create lasting memories with friends and family that we otherwise would not make. When I look back at my photos on social media, the most memorable photos are the ones that were taken while on a trip. This is likely the same for most people. Specifically, I can look back at photos taken while on vacation in Europe, the Bahamas, or down in South Florida and remember all the fun that specific trip provided down to the details. Now that we have a young son, we want to make sure we continue to provide experiences for him that we can look back on years down the road.
Travel also exposes us to different cultures and traditions, and through these authentic encounters, we learn to embrace and celebrate both our similarities and our differences. Travel teaches us about humanity and gives us an appreciation, understanding, and respect for different points of view and ways of life. While there is so much to offer, as far as travel destinations are concerned, here in the good old USA, you really should consider dusting off your passport to travel to other countries and learn about other places you may never even think about. This can often be the best way to immerse yourself in history, geography, culture, and cuisine (typically my favorite part).
Lastly, like so many of my friends and colleagues, I find myself so busy with work that I need a vacation simply for some relief. It can help to fall off the radar for a week or so to relax and recalibrate. Our lives have become time-starved and technology-driven, which leads to hardly any time to truly “switch off.” Travel, especially to someplace remote, allows us to temporarily escape from life’s daily deadlines and demands. It encourages us to disconnect from our phones, laptops, and computers and reconnect with our family and friends. It’s a shame that we cannot designate more time to such a necessary feature of our lives.
With all that said, I encourage all of you reading this to consider carving out a week or two this year—if you haven’t already—to take a trip with your family, friends, or simply on your own. Take off somewhere that you’ve never had the chance to visit but have always wanted to go and make some memories that are sure to last a lifetime. I guarantee it will be worth it.

Associate Stewart J. Subjinski Leads Student Mock Trial Competition |

On March Fourth, Attorney Stewart Subjinski assisted in hosting a mock trial tournament for local high school students in the region. During the tournament, students were able to practice their litigation skills in real courtrooms and received feedback in real-time from local judges, who graciously volunteered their time for the event.
Mock trial is an important way of encouraging students to enter the legal field. In fact, Stewart participated in trial competitions throughout high school, college, and law school.

What Do the Florida Supreme Court Changes to Florida's Summary Judgement Mean for the Business Community?
On December 31, 2020, the Florida Supreme Court changed Florida’s summary judgment standard by adopting the federal standard in an amendment to Florida Rule of Civil Procedure 1.510. Summary judgment can be a useful tool that allows a court to decide a case after pleadings (and most of the time after discovery) if no questions of material fact remain. Before the amendment to Rule 1.510, Florida state courts and the federal courts disagreed on when such a question remained, and as a result Florida courts were a bit handcuffed on when the issues of a case can be winnowed before trial. In amending Rule 1.510, the Florida Supreme Court abandoned Florida’s interpretation of what constitutes a “genuine issue of material fact” in favor of the more lenient federal interpretation articulated by the U.S. Supreme Court. Spring has sprung. The sun is staying out later. The weather—and our office social battery—is heating up.
We kicked off the month with our annual Mardi Gras party, which could have rivaled any New Orleans bash you could imagine. Well, maybe that’s an exaggeration, but word on the street is that we were in the office till 7:30, which is something to write home about. Beads, masks, king cake, big-band music, and category 5 hurricanes kept us feeling like we were smack-dab in the middle of the French Quarter, all from floor 14 of the Wells Fargo Center.

Not to be outdone, our St. Patrick’s Day celebration had us seeing all shades of green. A charcuterie board, Irish coffees, and basketball on our big-screen conference room TV had us feeling lucky, even if our staff March Madness bracket told a different story…
Lastly, we ended the month celebrating National Crunchy Taco Day with catering from Hightide Burrito. Whether you're a hard or soft taco kind of person, we were just thankful lunch was covered!
